Assigning track activation to CC pad that toggles on and off

Post by misterbreadsticks » Mon Feb 20, 2017 3:50 pm

 So I bought an Akai Mini MK2 midi controller over the weekend and decided I wanted to go ahead and get Ableton, and I've been having a blast! I have a question though, and I'm hoping some of you could answer it. Thanks in advance, and if I'm using incorrect terminology, please correct me :)

- How do I mute/unmute or activate/deactive a track using the MK2's pad's built-in CC toggles?
The Mini MK2 has 8 pads with two banks and a CC mode for those pads. In the CC mode, I can set the pad to toggle or momentary. Although I can map the plain non-CC pads to the play button for a clip on a track, I can't seem to map the midi toggle CC pad to track activator switches. These CC toggle modes seem to be mapped to certain knobs. Will I have to unmap the CC values for these knobs in order to map them to the activator? Is the activator switch even what I want to map? So ideally, I'd like to record some bass-lines or drum beats, assign them to a track, and then assign that track to a toggle. This seems pretty simple, but I haven't found videos of anyone actually doing something like this, so I wonder if it's even possible.

I figured it out. God, what a rush.

For those of you who end up Goggling your way to this question, this is what I did.

setup

-mk2
By default, the pads are set to toggle in CC mode as opposed to momentary. You can edit this in the MPK editor though.
You'll also need to make sure that both track and remote options are turned on for your MK2, both input and output mode. If you don't have both, you won't be able to map the track activator.

-recording
First, get your instrument into the session view, making what's called a track.
Second, press one of the round buttons on the left of the track, this will start recording.
Play the notes or beats you want, and when you're done, press the stop button at the top, or you can also press the red arrow button on the track that replaced the round one.
That row should now have the midi info for the clip you played, just press the green arrow to play it back.

-mapping
press the midi map button (cmd + m or ctrl + m)
Set your Akai to CC mode, where the pad toggles are active and click the clip you want to control.
Now, at the bottom of the track your clip is on, press the yellow numbered box, the track activator, that's above the S and red note key.
Now press the pad you want to control the clip, and exit midi mode.

There! Now as long as the track is set to loop, and is in play mode, that toggle pad will activate or deactivate the track! Remember that this is on a track by track basis, and you're not able to toggle individual clips in the track.
