Synth Samples

Post by Johnnyjazz » Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:27 pm

Hello. I have some (simple) questions about using the synth samples from ableton packs (Retro Synths and Beat Tools), and I dont/t know if I/m doing it right. I upload a synth sample in Sampler, select a small portion of it, but it doesn't sound like the preview. Further more, do I have to upload all the sounds corresponding to a scale in the Zone tab (C1, D1,etc) for it to transpose it and play it accordingly?(why are there different pitches folders for one sound) PS i want to play the sounds using a 5 octave keyboard.

Thanks for the patience

Folders? I think you mean samples. When you sample an instrument you typically want to avoid - Or have it as an option — the unnatural chipmunk effect. Therefore, you sample multiple notes from the whole range of the keyboard. You may also sample the same note at different velocities to represent dynamic range with velocity switching. How many you actually need to sample depends on the sound in question.

With Sampler that has quite OK filters using one-cycle samples and recreating sounds using it as the instrument it is, is very attractive I think. What I like to use is a Sampling Synthesizer and Sampler fits the bill for me for that task. It's raw and fast, which is what I like.

The samples you want to use in this case likely are with no or open filters. Whatever sounds good works though.

If you have them, this is an option. Place the note to its original root note, and when you add the next make sure they only sound one at a time, unless you prefer some overlap.

If you analyse one of the existing patches you'll get some ideas for how to do this.

So I could use only a C1 in Sampler and still being tehcnically ok playng chords and lines on the whole keyboard approximately?
Thanks very much for the info. Cheers

Yes, if you like that sound then go for it. Just make sure you tune it to C1, or whatever it is in default playback, if needed. Most of the time it's enough to place it correctly. Also note the quality setting of interpolation which will affect one note samples more.
