Monitor In vs Auto - MIDI Playback - Live Loop - Delete Clip
Hey everyone. I am thrilled to be a new Live user, and I am specifically trying to use this for live loop recording performances. Of course I have hit a couple snags right off the bat, but I am gobbling up these excellent posts and Youtube tutorials so I should be off the ground soon.
My primary issue at the moment is that it seems that I can only record through a VST instrument with the Monitor IN selected, but then the playback will not play unless I switch the Monitor to Auto. I did not notice this when I was using the Lite version, but maybe I was just doing audio (can't remember). I assume there is an issue with my MIDI preferences, but I believe I have tried every combination with no luck. Do I need to set up a MIDI trigger to toggle this, or is there a better way through this?
Also, is there a way to UNDO or DELETE a clip from the APC40? If not, I assume I can set up another controller and map this? I am hoping to eventually set up my Digitech RP20 to help control Live. I have read that Bome's Midi Translator may be useful with this, but that stuff comes later.
Finally, how do I replace record over a clip when I am live loop recording? On the APC40, it turns green after the first take and I can't seem to replace it even when the track is armed. Since I still can't figure out how to preset loop lengths, the track will keep going on record until I press the clip pad on the APC40 to stop it--- which of course then prevents further recording on that clip.
I'd appreciate any advice you can share. Thanks!

Re: Monitor In vs Auto - MIDI Playback - Live Loop - Delete Clip
Well I just came across these 2 videos below and they were extremely helpful. I still would appreciate any feedback regarding the IN/AUTO issue. For now, grouping seems to help somewhat. I am hoping to be able to use the looper with the clip launch functions on the APC40, so any additional info would be helpful.

Hope this helps someone else.

If you arm a track for recording, Auto will 'listen' to your midi playing. All slots on that channel will have record buttons. You tap one just before the bar starts. Play notes and tap again just before you expect it to end.
Overdub on let's you record Extra notes on top of your recorded notes. With it off, you can play notes while it is looping without it recording anything. I find te overdub button on the apc quite handy. Quantized on/off too.
In allows all midi to come into the channel, regardless of whether it is armed or not. Off plays and records clips, but you will never hear them As you are playing them, since it has monitoring turned off. It is handy though if you have one specific channel set to In, routing out to several 'Off' channels with Record Arm on. You can capture several moments on the fly (that setup is probably better for audio looping)
I'm sure you'll make sense of some of it haha

Re: Monitor In vs Auto - MIDI Playback - Live Loop - Delete Clip
Thanks a lot for the response, it helped a lot. I hooked up my RP20 to Live through Bome's Midi Translator. I have the pedal controlling keystrokes at the moment and I have another in FS2 to record/launch if I can't use my hands. This is so fun!
It seems like the audio comes in 1/16th too late when recording Audio, hmmm...
EDIT: Options/Delay Compensation was on.

Re: Monitor In vs Auto - MIDI Playback - Live Loop - Delete Clip
Does anyone know if it is possible to play content from a MIDI clip while playing on MIDI Keyboard as input for the same track?
Arming the track makes this possible. But is this also possible without arming?

Re: Monitor In vs Auto - MIDI Playback - Live Loop - Delete Clip
Arming is the only way as far as I can tell. The other two options cut off one option or the other. Unless you wanted to make a second channel and have that play midi clips into the channel set to in while you play keyboard.
If overdub is the problem, you can turn that off and on whenever you want. You can also force only a specific keybkard as input if it is a keyboard that you want always only going to that channel. If arming itself is getting messy.... I don't really have any tips for dealing with that :/

Hey, this is late to the thread but hopefully someone finds it useful. When it comes to playing with midi, then getting it to play back without fussing with midi IN and AUTO settings, check out this video it explains how to do so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JoER_NLAlU
