Warp Off but Tap Tempo still screws up Audio File playback

Post by dogeatdogg » Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:48 pm

So I've tried everything. There's even a youtube video for this option but the guy's using an older version of A.L.
So I put a drum loop (or any other loop that has no tempo info) into my arrangement window, turn OFF Warp in the Sample window, hit play and start Tap tempo but it's nearly impossible to do since it moves the audio file all over the place instead of just continuously playing.
How do I get this to work?

cheers

This? What's "moves the audio file" supposed to mean here?

What's the objective? To find true tempo of file with tap? What are your expectations and what do you get?

I'm trying to determent the tempo without having to use a metronome app on my phone.
When I hit play and start tapping the tempo the audio file changes tempo as well instead of playing at it's original tempo while I'm tapping.
This makes it virtually impossible to figure a steady tempo.
Again Warp is turned OFF.

Warping is probably much easier than using tap tempo. And more precise.

Tap tempo with loops works better when you're 'recording' a loop. Not so much if you're trying to play a loop in Arrangement View. You might have okay luck by playing it in Session View. Just set a Follow action to play the unwarped clip again after 1 Bar. Then you can keep adjusting the tempo until it seemlessly loops.

I'd also like to point out that you can Warp it just for the purpose of finding the tempo of the loop. Warping uses the information of you setting the grid of the clip and then it shows the tempo that you needed to use in order to align the beat.

This information can then be typed into your Master tempo, and you can use the loop unwarped and it should be quite accurate. Much more accurate than tap tempo.

If you want to tap out the tempo of an audio file just to find the tempo so you can set it in the project, drop the audio wav into a scene in Session view and turn off Warping. Fire the clip, tap the tempo.

I just did it without it affecting the playback. Is this what you're having trouble with?

This is the fastest way I found for a short clip — if longer just crop it shorter for now, making sure the start and end are trimmed.
  • Drop the clip on arrangement
  • Turn off Warp
  • Play back and count the bars and make sure the bar starts exactly at the loop start. If not, move the clip so you have what will be 1.1.1 at loop start.
  • Set the loop length to the number of bars
  • Turn on the metronome
  • Now adjust the tempo in the transport holding down shift to get increments until the end of the clip lines up with the end of the loop.
  • Compare to the metronome
  • note the bpm and set that for this clip or the longer clip if this was a cropped version.
This took about ten seconds to find the proper tempo of a dropped clip, some more if adjustments are needed. Main drawback is that Live's tempo resolution is limited (Why Ableton, why?).

I think the answer here is dragging the clip into a SESSION clip instead of arrangement. In session, as you tap the tempo, the audio file keeps playing per usual, making it easy to find the tempo. In arrangement, if you tap the tempo, the audio jumps all around. This has been bothering me forever! Glad to have it sorted out.
