I would like to record my own drum samples. What db level do you recommend I record them at?

With what equipment exactly?

Generally I record anything at the level it has coming in, not adding any extra preamp gain unless I want that for my sound, sometimes I gate already at recording because I have some background noise and I know I want it more clean.

The most I've peaked when tracking I think is about -12dB peak. That was both the drummer hit as well as the level I got naturally from the mic. I typically peak much lower than that and with 24bit audio that's fine.
Make some music!
