ableton lockup problem!!! help!!!

Post by djshiva » Sat Aug 27, 2005 3:59 am

okay, so the specs on my machine are in my sig.

since i got the new puter, everything works fine except for ableton. i can play for a bit and then everything just locks. i can hear sound, but all the meters are frozen and i can't do anything at all. it stops after about a minute, but then usually does it aggain and again until i just can't deal with it anymore and quit working.

at first i thought it was because i was using the onboard soundcard that came with my motherboard, but i just put in the soundblaster live card that i was using with my old computer (never had this problem) and i am having the same problem.

does anyone have ANY ideas, cuz i am totally out of them, and have several unfinished projects that are damn near impossible to finish with this problem happening.

everything is legit on this machine too, so it's not a crack issue or anything like that, just to allay those questions...

aaagh! help!

F. Bueller took a day off.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

No clue about your problem though. Have you tried trashing the preferences?

i have not. this never happened on my old machine, but started immediately when i got my new computer. and it does it with live 4 and 5.
does trashing the prefs help on 4 or is it just a 5 prob?

Did you disable the onboard sound before putting in the SB?
Did you check for IRQ conflicts?
What drivers are you using for Live? WDM probably? (If not ASIO4ALL)

Just shooting in the dark, hope any of this helps...

yeah i was just reminded to disable the onbaord drivers. i do have ASIO4all drivers as well, so i will try them. i have been working on a track for an hour and it hasn't locked up again, so *crosses fingers* i am hoping ditching the onboard drivers helped. thank you for your suggestions! :)

ok. lil update on this.

disabled onboard drivers...didn't help.
trashed preferences...didn't help.

i am at my wits end with this problem. it's to the point where i am about to sell my box and get something else. i would prefer not to do that, so if anyone has ANY clues, i would love you forever.

if the screen freezes and nothing moves but the sound is going, is this a video card issue maybe? i am using the same video card that i had in the old machine (no probs there). it's a GeForce2 that came with my old puter. has dedicated memory and all that fun stuff. updated the drivers when i installed everything on this machine, but i am wondering.

although i think it did the same thing before i installed the video card, cuz i thought it was the onboard one causing probs.

or i was thinking today maybe there's some wonky vst that's buggin out, but i use different ones in diff songs and it does it on everything.

i am REALLY REALLY REALLY needing some help here, cuz i got this machine specifically for live and live is the ONLY program that has issues with it. i have talked to sooooo many people and no one can figure this out.

HEEELLLLPPPP!

have you tried the latest beta from the 'bugs n problems' page? maybe theres a particular bug that disagrees with your machine and they've fixed it... (grasps at straw)....
what about emptying your vst folder and seeing if it happens only using samples (it could be a dud VST somewhere).
what does the cpu meter get up to when this happens?
Hp Elitebook 2.8Ghz. Live 7.0.14 & Live 8.1.5, XP Pro. and stuff...

i thought about that vst thing today, so i am gonna go home and run it with no vst folder selected and maybe add vsts until i figure it out.

the thing is, it doesn't matter how much is going on. i could have one kick drum using barely any cpu and it will still do it. then the screen locks and i couldn't tell you what the cpu is at anyway.

it is making me absolutely crazy, to the point where i have gone back to using reason until i can figure this out.

Have you posted your problems over on the Bugs Forum?

Have you DL'd the latest beta (5.0.2)? It has a bug reporting feature, so that when Live crashes, your computer creates a report to send back to Ableton so they can look at what was going on when Live cacked....

I say get in contact with support directly via mail, it seems a pretty serious issue - they might be able to shed some light on it.

angstrom: i first thought it was something simple that i could figure out with a little inquisitiveness and problem solving, but it has beaten me and i just want an answer, so i sent off an email yesterday to support.

i really thought it would be something simple (and it still may), but at this point i am so frustrated i want to throw my machine out the window...

thanks everyone for your suggestions...

Just did a fast googling and found some info at the NI forum about problems with ACPI drivers. Have a read here:

What a bout contacting the shuttle support if that doesn´t help.
