Monitoring in Live vs Interface sound bleeding in master

Post by TrailofMarbles » Wed Jan 17, 2018 1:00 pm

Hi there,

I hope someone can explain what's happening in my setup. Maybe it's not Ableton, but the interface i'm using (then please let me know!), but I have the following problem:

For Live use, I bought a Behringer (yes..) umc204hd interface. The reason for this was so I could use external effects. I used to use ableton intro or lite, but upgraded to Ableton Live for the External Instrument option. This was it was easy to route, and have my external effect(s) as a send for instance.

Since my signal is going out mono, I have it set up as followed:

Main out L/1 has a cable going to a guitar effect (this example, tremolo). From the guitar effect, a cable to input 2. I have it set up like this in my external effect ofcourse.
Main out R/2 is going straight to a monitor or to a PA.

The Behringer has a Mix knob on the front. I have that turned all the way to the right (PlayBack). This should mean that no signal from my inputs is being monitored through the main out I would think.

The Cue out, and Main out are both set to Main Out R/2.

The think is: I have a slight sound bleeding into the master out. When the tremolo is on, there is a faint tremolo ticking in the background. I would think that when I turn the send track off or the track it is being applied to (midi instrument) there would be no signal sent to the master out and thus impossible to hear any tremolo.

Is that assumption right?

I had hoped that in my output config, I could select only 1&2 Mono, instead of 1&2 Mono + 1&2 Stereo and that that would be the solution, but it's not possible to have selected only 1 of those options.

Is it another setting in Live that I'm not familiar, or is the setup I have thought out faulty?

how do the extra outputs on your interface work? if you can feed your effects unit from one of those, that would be much better than attempting to split the usage of your main outs.

also, can you use the inserts on channels coming from your computer, or do they only work on the analogue inputs of the interface?

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Besides the main outs there are Inserts. But I just want to use it for 1 track, so thats not an option.

The other outs are RCA. To be honest I have never thought about using those. Is it possible to go from a mono RCA to a guitar pedal?

I'm not sure about the question about channels coming from my computer? I have the interface connected with USB. I am using guitar effects, so I think they only work when using with the analogue inputs.

Check your inputs on your ableton session. Make sure EXT is disabled on them. No questions. ;)
