I got a copy of Rebirth in the late 90s. I ran it on a Pentium2 pro 233mhz. 32 meg of ram. Windows 95 se. I don't think it was even a VST at the time, just a standalone. It was astounding at the time "wow we can make music IN the computer!" .
I think its day has been and gone though.
Ha, that was my exact same spec machine of the time, the old P233 which was an update from my P133 though I had only 16MB ram and a 1.2GB HDD. Saved $750 from fruit picking in my first summer out of high school to pay for it second hand. I use to sample Rebirth for 15 minutes onto cassette then sample it back into the PC (through the on-board sound card of course) and create hand trimmed loops for use in Fasttracker. Made a few tracks then started to realise that although the sound was awesome for the time, every track started sounding the same.

RIP good times.

I forgot the crucial part of my '97 setup. This soundcard was groundbreaking. At least for me. It came with a kind of crappy 8 track software which interfaced with an ADAT.

£500 it was, which iad about £900 in todays money. We wore onions on our belts which was the style at the time. Etc.

My first proper soundcard was a Layla24, that brings back some memories!

As I am almost 53, I know all these old cards and software.... At first I had an Event Darla card, running Windows 95 and a very old version of Cubase, dunno what version it was. Then I moved to a RME Digi 96 pro Adat card in my then Win 98 PC, and used an Yamaha 01v for conversion. Later I added a Creamware XTC card with 8 sharcs on it to do the processesing. My PC at that time was a Pentium 2 with 64 Mb of Ram. This setup costed a fortune at the time......

Though it was expensive, it was an exciting time. In these days I graduated from the Amsterdam SAE as audio engineer, and I played in several bands. I builded my own home studio, and had loads of fun. Still have fun, but I take it a lot easier, no more pressure!

Thanks for sharing, and bringing up old memories LOL.

Oh I remember my friend at the time had a sound blaster and I desperately wanted one for the MIDI playback. How good it sounded at the time.

Kids today will never understand the simple things and now I feel old :(

As I stated, I turn 53 this month, but I don't feel old though.....LOL.
Before the "serious soundcards" I had a Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold with nice Midi capabilities and Soundfonts onboard with, if I remember well, 2Mb ram onboard for sounds. It had a digital out, which I connected to my, YES, Minidisk recorder LOL.

For the price of the Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold, you can have a decent interface these days, and yep back then it was a serious card for gaming etc. Which reminds me of my add on videocard, a Voodoo 1 added to an s3 Virge video card to play Tomb Raider 1. Man those where the days LOL.

Literally had to buy those cards too to play Tomb Raider.

Yes! Rebirth on a PC with win 95 etc! Yes it sounded fantastic I thought. But you've made a valid point...if you were to compare it to an aBL3 it might not do too well.

This seems to be the route for me.

In the meantime I've been having with the Tee Bee samples in Live. Good fun but I'm having to feed it through Live's oevrdrive thing to get a rougher sound. I may need to eq it a bit as well.

Thanks everyone!

Found this neat little sample pack, haven't really tried it out but everything else they make is really good.

This is all a great trip down memory lane...

I am 50 next month which prompted my original post. My family have asked me what I want for my birthday and this threw up all the possibilities...ABl 3, a Korg Volca bass, a Focusrite audio/midi interface for the mac....the list could go on!

Yes, I used to have a Pentium 2 PC (win 95) with Rebirth, Cakewalk (4 midi tracks I recall), Rubber duck 303 style bass...

When I decided to "go serious about music tech," I got a soundblaster platinum with the front panel interface that had a volume knob on the front. I was so convinced of a career in pop music that I even invested in a Yamaha daughter board that sat on top of the soundblaster card. It had onboard sound things and the demo CD had a version of The Robots by Kraftwerk. Needless to say, all I could do sounded awful!

I remember my mate coming over and getting all the midi transmit channels sorted for me, getting my Yamaha AN1X synth to talk to things. Turning a control on the harware and seeing a pot on Rebirth move! Mind blowing!

My music making is slightly better these days I hope:
