Mic pre opinions.

Post by thunderboxfunhead » Mon Sep 19, 2005 2:42 pm

Hi. Just bought the RME Fireface 800 and yes, I love it. I now want a few more mic pres and was thinking either the RME Octamic or the Mackie Onyx 800R. Any thoughts? Anybody tried the Onyx or both of these units? They are roughly the same price so I'm more interested in the sound-quality and the features. The Mackie has a few more options but I'm sure liking the pres on the Fireface (same ones as the Octamic, so I'm familiar with those). Thanks in advance.

Check the Sebatron VMP series. Meant to be the shizzle...
Also JoeMeek / Ted Fletcher... and the Groove Tubes Vipre is highly regarded.

If the RME are very transparent you might want to consider something with more color to the sound so that you have some options. I don't know the Onyx but from what I have heard they are in the good not great range.

i use it only for drums ,live & in the studio .it picks up low frequency perfectly .

Another vote for the ADA8000...Some Behringer gear is good :-)

you might also consider the FMR Audio Really Nice Preamp. It pretty transparent, but from what I've heard, it sounds as good as things twice or three times its price. They carry it @ Mercenary Audio, among others.
