Teenage engineering OP-1 recording controller data

Hi, I try to record OP-1 controller modulations in ableton. The scenario is: I recorded a midi track that plays the OP-1 as a sound module. Now I perform filter modulations and would like to record those as automation data in ableton. How do I do that? If I switch the OP-1 mode to CTRL then it doesn't play the sound anymore. If it is in OP-1 mode it seems that it doesn't send controller messages. Is that really true?
If so is there any workaround how to automate OP-1 parameter with ableton?
