Ableton as a drum machine

Post by Fritz » Fri Mar 02, 2018 3:11 pm

I'm on v8. I normally only use for playback for TV and live performances, more a cart machine.
Composition is new territory for me.
Can Live be run with a bunch of samples such that every time you play a drum, a different sample plays?
Much like Drumagog does replacement.

There are a few ways to approach this. You'll probably have to hand craft some elements.

I'd either use a max LFO device with S&H and assign it to a selection for a kind of 128 kit or use the Random midi device (velocity device is also possible but then you lose velocity).

For actual samples you can choose between warped or unwarped. For warped it might be nice for like broken up loops.

Some of this might be heavy on CPU and hard drive usage. Might be good to store the samples in ram (be careful, only do a limited amount and only if you have a decent amount of ram) or at least a solid drive, but even an SDD won't be as happy as ram.

Sample and hold, it's a waveform used by some LFO's, basically a random effect.
