Launchpad Mk2 used question

I am a musician contracted to a charity that works in the community offering advice and nurturing groups to start out or revitalise there musical experience. I have a student who would like to buy a Launchpad to create music for his songs. My question is if he gets a launchpad that is used is there a way of getting a lite license for it if the hardware owner no longer has the license details to transfer?
The student has had several sessions with me now and has shown a high interest in working with Ableton live 8 using a launchpad. He is a SEND student and I would like to be able to advise the cheapest way of starting up.
