I'm running the 2012 Mini too. Apple made crap computers for the last 6 years but might be back on track if the latest iMac is something to go by.
A modular Mac Pro is expected to be announced, hopefully at WWDC.

Well, that is true.Pitch Black wrote:

There might be a new mac mini in the price point of the old one.
But for somebody who has to argue with any statement in any thread, I'd love to hear how you see 10000$ as a realistic price point for the mac pro.
Or are you already accounting for Trump's influence on the whole Qualcomm takeover?

Well, the iMac Pro is $5000. For starters. Once you get what a normal music producer would want — 10 cores, RAM, SSD of size — it's more than $7000.hoffman2k wrote:There might be a new mac mini in the price point of the old one.

But you're right actually. I forgot about the screen. Probably the Mac Pro is going to be around $4000 and up. Which doesn't really change the comparison to the mini price level…

Yes, "normal" music producers definitely need a fully optioned Mac Pro. Blow their entire years budget on a single computer, cause who needs real synths anyway? And the yet to be released Macs are definitely gonna cost more than ever before. That is just solid logic. (Pun not intended)Stromkraft wrote:Well, the iMac Pro is $5000. For starters. Not sure why your argument needed to be strengthened with a PM calling me a coward and motorcycle man? If anything, bicycle man would have been more appropriate.

No-one told me you were on a bicycle. Why don't tell people these things upfront? If I only had known…hoffman2k wrote:

To get back to the subject, I didn't bring the Mac Pro into the discussion. When you do this, the expected prices follow with the argument. Whatever these may be, they do not compare to Mac Mini. That was my only point, OK?

The biggest problem of Macs is their operating system. On a PC Ableton runs on Windows7. That is time of Leoard OS X 10.5.8, that runs nothing nowadays. Very shame Apple.

Do you know anything about how to get a new Windows 7 license? Turns out I need one as the one I have is 32bit. I'd assume I have to buy one second hand. I actually like Windows 8. I don't see myself installing Windows 10 though.8E wrote:The biggest problem of Macs is their operating system. On a PC Ableton runs on Windows7. There are a lot of old machines that are thrown away with the license. Just buy a second hand license or a very old computer.
W7 is VERY robust and stable. Not to be compared with 8.1. I would recommend it definitely.
I am strongly concerning to move to Windows. I used win until about 2007. But what is enough is enough: Apple is not doing the proper job anymore. It is not PRO.
There are numerous OS flaws and problems, not here to list, but they don't focus on the compatibility and stability. I am now on El Capitan. It is going to be obsolete soon. But it is not a finished and polished OS. Sierra is neither finished. Nor High Sierra.

I'm on macoS Sierra. Zero issues and RME issued special drivers. Life is sweet. I think you missed the memo that Sierra fixed the long standing CoreAudio bug introduced with OS X 10.9 Mavericks. There's not a chance I'd install macOS 10.13. Apple will not be forgiven that security palaver.8E wrote:Sierra is neither finished.
I'd like Windows for another machine where I plan to double boot (games).

Support for Windows 7 is dropped in 2020.

Yes. It just confirms my theory how great that system is. MS seems to be more customer orientated than Apple.H20nly wrote:Support for Windows 7 is dropped in 2020.
When was Leopard dropped? High Sierra will be dropped that year too.

Support for Windows 7 to 2020 is what MS call Extended Support, which for consumer users means security updates. It does not include non-security updates.8E wrote:Yes. Microsoft has always provided long-term support for their more entrenched versions of Windows. Windows XP (shudder) was supported for 12 years. There are so many Windows installations, and many organisations do not upgrade their machines, often because they are dependent upon applications that will never be updated to run on newer versions of Windows. To accomplish this longevity, Windows contains a large amount of backwards compatibility hacks. This is a blessing and a curse.

Re: Is 2,3 GHz underpowered these days?
Just to pipe in - am on a 2012 2.4 quad core i7 lenovo laptop with an SSD and running Win7 and this thing is still smoking. I stopped doing Windows updates ages ago, so much so that it's too much work to decide what to install and I would put it on auto cos it would probably kill the machine. No support after 2020? I probably couldn't get it now.
Price point for Mac always put me off. Am staying away from Win10 for as long as I can.

10 works well on an SSD. It should't be allowed within 100 yards of a HDD
