On my VAIO PC, Live refuses to start, or rather "kills itself" in an unusual way, right during startup, as follows:
>>>
Runtime Error!
Program:.... Live 5.0.2b6.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
<<<
This error message pops up *immediately* upon attempting to start live, that is, the "splash" window with the logo never gets a chance to display on the screen.
This originally started with the 5.0 demo, then with the 5.0.1 purchased version, now with the beta. The only thing that I can recall having changed on that computer is: 1. I defragged my hard disk and 2. My network connectivity at this exact moment is unavailable. I will try again when the network comes back up to see if live is responding badly to network conditions.
I have this version of live "registered" and "activated" on both my VAIO laptop and my home PC. So far I have not had any of such problems on my home PC. Both of these computers mirror each other in terms of the VST's available and the songs I work on.
This is a very serious problem because it is denying me access to the program that I purchased (since it affects the beta as well as the non-beta installations) and now my most recent songs have become "hostage" of version 5, since they won't load on version 4 anymore.
please help

Hi purplenoise,
thanks for the log file.
It indicates that there is a problem with Quicktime and DirectSound.
When Live starts up it calls a function to initalize Quicktime which fails in your case somewhere deep in the framework code of DirectSound.
- Do you have installed Quicktime shortly or did you have it also as Live still ran?
- Do you have installed any new audio driver?
- Can you start Quicktime standalone without any problems?
regards,
Alex

Hi (again) Aurelio,
There was already another user having this problem with the Indigo audio interface: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26774
So probably a driver update will solve this problem.
The reason why this was never a problem in Live is simply because there we do not access Quicktime. In Live 5 we need Quicktime or (DirectShow if QuickTime is not available) for the MP3 decoding.

Alex

Interesting ...
On my laptop system I was regularly swapping between different Indigo cards (the I/O model for recording, the DJmodel for other things). This was a DAW dediucated Windows XP installation which had been alive for getting close to 2 years so it really was due for WinXP to be reinstalled (many betas from different companies had been on this system, 8 different audio interfaces had been installed at some stage).
With this decaying WinXP installation I was getting these exact error messages appearing on launch whenever I'd launch Live with either Indigo present !!! I first observed this error message during the beta phase of Live 5. Having a different soundcard present in the system other than the Indigo = Live launches without this error.
I recently found time to nuke this decaying WinXP partition and reinstall from fresh, from scratch. I've since only had the Indigo DJ connected to the system. I no longer get this error message when launching Live 5 with Indigo present.
Alex It's interesting you mention Quicktime is required for mp3 decoding ... on this decaying WinXP partition I had "Quicktime Alternative" installed at some stage (for use with Nuendo) for doing music to picture work.
