Is there a philosophy to building a 64 pad controllerism set

I’ve downloaded a couple of pre built 64 pad sets to just jam on, but lately I’ve been trying to build my own. I’m stuck with both limitations and a lack of ideas, I’m just wondering if anybody has any kind of philosophy on building these racks so I can start getting an idea of how I should be going about it. Anything helps! :3
