Is it possible to just buy and upgrade license?

I have Ableton Live 9 Full which I'm looking to sell. I have a possible buyer who accidentally bought a license for an upgrade to Ableton 10 Full.

Is this possible? Can you buy just an upgrade license even if you don't have a previous version of Ableton? I only get upgrade prices if I log in and verify my current license, so I find it weird if this would be possible.

Retailers sell download only licenses too, and they don't ask for your current license number. Or he's purchased an upgrade license code from someone who hasd't yet registered it.

Who knows? Ze might not be an Ableton user, but might in fact be a ravenous brown bear that wants to eat you. I'd use paypal, just in case.
