When exporting midi file Ableton's shifting notes?
When exporting midi file Ableton's shifting notes?
Just noticed by accident... I exported midi file in Ableton 10.02 (latest Mac OS) and then imported it back, guess what, Ableton shifting notes! From first look it kinda the same but if you zoom it closely, notes are or longer, or shorter or just moved. Was it in previous versions the same? When did it happen? If it was always like this then I'm f..d...I created 100s of midi files and now they're not exactly I expected them to be??
Tried to export as a loop, in different other ways - same shit.

Could be a length thing, loop thing or the fact resolution is only 96 ppq. I think MIDI export sucks. I record DAW to DAW/Sequencer instead.valhill wrote:Just noticed by accident... what do you mean by "resolution is only 96 ppq"?
Just installed latest Beta - same thing.

Re: When exporting midi file Ableton's shifting notes?
Actually it's PPQN these days, i e "Pulses Per Quarter Note" (or TPQN as in Ticks…) which is the smallest unit of time within a MIDI clip. See here Does anyone know what is Live's MIDI resolution? and learn that Live's internal MIDI resolution is many times 96 PPQN.valhill wrote:what do you mean by "resolution is only 96 ppq"?
Anything not on the 96 grid will be quantized to that in the resulting MIDI file at exporting. This may nit be an issue for programmed phrases but certainly for live performance MIDI recordings.
Could you perhaps describe in more detail what the problem is and also the clip in question?valhill wrote: Just installed latest Beta - same thing.

Re: When exporting midi file Ableton's shifting notes?
As I said, try to export any midi clip, let’s say to your desktop and then bring it back to your project, just put on another midi channel, below the one that you just exported, zoom and compare every note.
Notes are not in exactly the same position in sense of length, start and ending.
Again, Ableton’s midi file, same project, same file and they are not identical after exporting and then importing back!
I don’t know anything about that resolution shit (although I do understand what they are talking about) but why do I have to think about it if this is the SAME clip in the SAME project! Why they are not identical? Completely fucked up.
Just thought...if this is resolution's problem, then probably export resolution is different from import resolution in Ableton's project? But then where I can check it and change to the same resolution?

Just tested ("export any midi clip... ...then bring it back to your project") and saw no difference.

impossible, unless it's some kind of poltergeist:)pottering wrote:Just tested ("export any midi clip... ...then bring it back to your project") and saw no difference.
Did you zoom your file? and check notes? I tried to export in any possible way, fixing the grid, widening the grid and narrowing and so on - same thing, again, from first look - they look the same, but if you zoom closely, every note is shifted a little bit.

I've just tried on a different computer - same thing. Are you on Mac OS or Windows? Here are pics:

Trying to replicate but with no similar results to yours. Could you upload an example set so that I could test and confirm?
