Sound through Ableton out of sync

Post by jakebm » Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:21 pm

Hey all,

Need some help with a sound sync issue that I don't think is latency... Well, my understanding of latency. I'm using an Analog Rytm with Ableton Live 9. The Rytm is connected via USB to Ableton but I am not using Overbridge. I have the audio outs of the Rytm connected to Ableton via my audio interface.

The sound from the interface is perfectly in time to Ableton's metronome, however the sound from Ableton is not.

Here's a video of whats happening: https://youtu.be/1cQXRVB2hbc The first audio is what is coming from the interface. I then unmute the Ableton track and then mute the interface to show how it is out of time.

When I record the Rytm audio in Ableton, this is also in time and is perfectly snapped to the grid.

I would be happy to use the sound from the interface however I like to put individual delays and reverbs on separate drum tracks. I won't be able to hear this in Ableton if I mute Ableton and just monitor from the interface.

I've gone through my latency settings and tried adjustments to compensate for the delay, however this then pushes the recorded sound out of time. Is there anything I am missing? I've flicked through the monitor settings "In" and "Auto" but nothing changes.

I've gone through the settings on the Rytm to make sure there is nothing dodgy going on and everything appears to be correct. It just appears to be Ableton playing the sound back 27ms later than it's actually happening (even though it's recording everything perfectly in time!).

it is a latency issue. it takes time for the analog audio signal to be converted to digital by your audio interface, plus time for Live to apply the effects (the latency of which will vary depending on the devices you are using), and then some more time to convert the digital signal back to analog so your ears can enjoy it...

Are you using a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40? I thought so seeing the controlpanel in the YT clip.... If so, yes they suffer from latency, most of the time going lower than 256 samples causes crackles and plops......

...the solution is to listen through ableton and not your analog rytm...then everything you tweak inside your live session will get compensated correctly...

You need to adjust the timing of the midi clock you’re sending to the rytm. Basically giving the rytm a head start.
You do this by giving the midi clock some negative delay in the midi output preferences in Ableton. How much delay depends on the amount of processing you do. Mine is set to -48 milliseconds and runs perfectly in sync.

You can do this, but you can also use External Instrument and adjust Hardware Latency in the same way. With this you can have different settings per instrument.
"Since external devices can introduce latency that Live cannot automatically detect, you can manually compensate for any delays by adjusting the Hardware Latency slider. The button next to this slider allows you to set your latency compensation amount in either milliseconds or samples.

If your external device connects to Live via a digital connection, you will want to adjust your latency settings in samples, which ensures that the number of samples you specify will be retained even when changing the sample rate.

If your external device connects to Live via an analog connection, you will want to adjust your latency settings in milliseconds, which ensures that the amount of time you specify will be retained when changing the sample rate.

Note that adjusting in samples gives you finer control, so even in cases when you’re working with analog devices, you may want to "fine tune" your latency in samples in order to achieve the lowest possible latency. In this case, be sure to switch back to milliseconds before changing your sample rate. Any latency introduced by devices within Live will be compensated for automatically, so the slider will be disabled when using the External Instrument Device to route internally.

Latency adjustments when routing to ReWire devices will probably not be necessary, as most ReWire-enabled programs also compensate automatically. But if you feel that something is “off“ in the timing of your set, try adjusting this slider."
