I think there should be an option to have "normal snap mode" in addition to the smart snap.

I made a suggestion on the L9 Centercode and the L10 Centercode, the suggestions did not get that much attention. I think, somehow, most people enjoy this weird aggravating snap system.

I am VERY glad that automation snapping has become optional in the betas, but not snapping remains this way with no options for snappy snap. And I dont think it will ever change.
Yeah, I don't understand how no one else seem to be bothered by this. It's like they haven't used a DAW where you don't constantly need to (consciously or subconsciously) compensate for weird snapping behavior, like Reaper for example:

It doesn't really seem to affect me as the magnetic snapping works pretty good but that said I would actually prefer a hard snap mode and a modifier to temporarily turn it off.

Coming from other DAWS I haven't been a huge fan of magnetic snapping as it is implemented worse in other DAWS and often can be confusing as hell.

I didn't realise this feature worked like this - I'm sure it didn't used to, but it's been driving me bonkers, wondering why the wretched thing wasn't snapping.

No, it annoys the hell out of me as well.
sign me up.

i've been annoyed by it a few times. it usually results in either a vocal track or a bass line starting right before when it should when this happens to me.

at normal zoom and from far off (my stool), i cannot see it on it the grid.

but, when the audio plays - Surprise! - as the bass line starts a quarter second too soon... and the vox are .73 bpm off

hi everyone - longtime Logic user, pretty new to Ableton as of this week and I just noticed this behavior today. It was driving me bananas because I thought it was either a bug, or something I was doing wrong.

I also extremely dislike this behavior. Especially when you can disable the grid easily, more often than not one would be moving things either on-grid or off-grid, and it is rare (at least in my case) to want this hybrid solution when I'm trying to snap things to grid.

I'm on 12.0.10 and I love so many things about this program but this one doesn't make sense to me.

Hold the cmd key to override snapping.

I've become increasingly aware of this behavior, and finally decided to research it to see what other people were saying, and found this thread (among others).

Reactions seem to range from "it's inconvenient and annoying" to "it makes perfect sense". To me, it seems inconvenient. There are two related features that mean there's no 'hard snap' to speak of: retaining a note's 'off the grid' offset when snapping, and not snapping at all until you hit a grid line (the particular behavior being discussed here).

Obviously this may vary between users, but generally when manipulating MIDI with the grid on, I just want a hard snap. If I don't want that, I turn off the grid or use the modifier key to disable snapping.

One thing that's interesting is that if you disable the grid, and then use the modifier key to enable snapping, these behaviors (or at least the one being discussed here) don't occur. For various reasons though, this isn't really an effective workaround.

I know we can make feature requests, but I get the impression from this thread and others that Ableton doesn't see this as an issue. I do have to say though that I'm in the camp that thinks the absence of a simple 'hard snap' option is an odd omission, and not at all convenient.
