Live Performance Setlists???

Post by EnjoyRC » Wed Oct 24, 2018 12:05 pm

For years, I've had a MASTER SET file. It contains all the necessary tracks for live performances. Click, Cues, Backing Tracks, MIDI tracks to control my Rig, Lights, Pro Presenter, etc... Each song is one SCENE.

Each week, I arrange the 5 songs for the set into SCENES 1 - 5.
Step through them one by one seamlessly via MIDI control pedals. (Nektar Pacer)
There are many great benefits to this setup. And a couple hindrances.

I've seen a product called OnStageLive Version 2.
Looks promising. Not sure if it's compatible with Ableton Live 10. Not sure if the delay between songs is tolerable.

How are you running your setlists?

(STUDIO I/O) MOTU UltraLite mk5 (w/ADA8200), (LIVE I/O) Behringer X Air XR18
Ableton Live Suite 11 (Live performances), Studio One 5 (Studio Stem Creation)

I run everything in one giant setlist (although rather more than one scene per song) controlled by a Launchpad. It's a pain to set up but makes life much easier at shows.

I used to run separate sets for each song but as you suggest the load time is a problem. It only takes about 20-30 seconds but that's a long time on stage. The disadvantage to me of one giant set is it isn't very spontaneous - if a song isn't in the set for that show it isn't going to get played.

I have our entire repertoire in the one SET. 50+ songs.
I move the 5 selected songs for the current week's set to SCENES 1-5.

I have one "page" of the launchpad per song. Complex songs get two pages.
I have the scene names as section titles and a bunch of empty clip off to the side which contain text notes (as clip titles)

The scene names, BPM info, clip notes and other info are sent to a heads up display. So if I change song page on the launchpad the HUD says "current playing song name:NAME OF SONG". and for the song I'm looking at "destination song: SONG NAME" where songname comes from the first scene name in that group. It also tells me the BPM. Also I have notes on what I'm meant to call up on my Beatstep, and what my analogs are meant to be doing etc.

It means I can jump from song to song however I like.
I don't really use the scene triggers unless its a total emergency. I just pay attention to the destination BPM and manually take it there, gradually bringing in the destination clips.

I'm sure none of that made sense.

I made it in max, my laptop is one of those fold-over things like a yoga.
the interface has some tabs so I can focus on either my notes, or sounds, or clip info. It's pretty handy.

I've been touring for over a year now with my setlist loader, made in MaxMSP (could be M4L with some changes). It loads the .als files. All of them contain this device that I developed to automatically discard changes : http://www.maxforlive.com/library/devic ... o-not-save
Reading the device description on the link you provide, it does the same thing + sending OSC info to the lightning guy so he knows which song is loaded, what bpm, etc.
It loads and saves setlist in text format. So what I do before a show is drag'n'drop the setlist.
It's been rock solid.
The only drawback is that it's hard to change the setlist during a show.
Some hints here : viewtopic.php?f=35&t=232072
