Triggering Ableton software instruments w/ Max standalone

Post by jx3 » Sun Nov 04, 2018 10:01 pm

I've been using Max 8 standalone to run/record audio from Max patches into Ableton Live. I've also been able to run Midi from Ableton back into Max patches....

But my issue is I can't figure out how to send midi *to* Abelton in order to trigger a Ableton software instrument. For example, send via noteout in Max to Ableton to trigger a drum kick or a note on Operator. Any resources or ideas? I've tried a lot of stuff over the last day or so with no luck. I'm not sure if the issue is on the Max side or the Ableton side or both. I do know that I'm not seeing Max show up on the Midi From chooser (the Input Type) no matter how I configure it.

*Note: FWIW, when I get the extra cash to upgrade to a higher spec PC I'll definitely upgrade to Max4Live...

On Mac you need to use the IAC drivers, in Windows you need to install a virtual MIDI cable, like LoopMIDI or LoopBe.

After you setup virtual MIDI ports they should show up in the MIDI config of all MIDI-enabled apps, including Live and Max, of course.

That's interesting...never heard of LoopMIDI or LoopBe. One thing I forgot to mention in my post is that I'm using Rewire (should have mentioned done that).

I will take a look at both and read the resources you sent as well. Thanks!

edit:Wow! That took all of maybe 10 minutes to trigger a Midi track Ableton...I'm sure it can be done with Rewire and Max code but why? Other than a learning experience...Now I can get along with writing code in Max to manipulate the MIDI.

Thank you sir! 8)
