looking for the strings!

Post by fsk » Thu Sep 22, 2005 6:27 pm

hey guys I either need help or Im being a complete idiot.

Well, I want to get some cheap "midi" sounding string sounds, like the ones found on an onboard soundcard. I first discovered them just messing around with Soundforge and using the keyboard sampler, I was hoping I could just record what I played off but nope I cant. I tried using Fruity loops to do this, but it wouldn't record the audio out when I rendered the loop. very sad :( i also tried other programs but no end result.

I've been trying out some synths, great sounds but its not what Im looking for, the sounds are just too good.

Do you guys know of a free / cheap way of getting these sounds, or if theres a free vst-i which comes with these sounds etc.

Thanks :O

is the cheap card a soundblaster by any chance? if so the strings are most likely a Soundfont

look around KVR for a soundfont player VSTi and load it into Live

also Total Recorder would most likely be able to capture that audio. Not positive but it basically acts as your soundcard so anything audible is routed through it.

Look for a synth that plays the General Midi stock instruments...JV1080 comes to mind...these are pretty simple sounding patches.

Also, there is a Sonic Reality CD called Omnisoundz that has General MIDI patches on it for use in Reason.

Hope this helps!

If I understood you right you want some authentic cheesy, funky strings. Go to a flea market on Saturday, look for some Casios. There is nothing like real kitchy sounding old consumer keyboard. You might get some weird extra percussive or "brass" sounds as a bonus.
