Is video rendering on MAC fixed in Live 10?

Hi,

I want to know if the video rendering is fixed in Live 10. Unfortunately, I don't have the chance to test Live 10 Beta... They have enough testers...

For those not aware, Live 9- 64 bits can't export video with OSX... So I have to keep Live 9 32 bits just for video rendering. The 64 bits version for Windows works fine

I've never had any issue with video rendering (I use 64bit), and still no issue with L10.

Could you tell me the settings you use? I tried many Mac computers and never could export a video with a proper image....

Support even told me they didn't know how to fix this, because Apple dropped their Quicktime codec in 64 bits OS

Video codecs and settings are something I don't really understand, but usually I export in H.264, or photoJPEG. But it's just for working purpose, so I never export with good quality in mind.
I remember back in the days Perian was needed for L9 (after the qt dropped I think, but not sure); that was probably when using Mavericks (or even Snow leopard maybe??).

Well I don't know if it's the Perian Codec, or just Live 10, but I was able to Export a video in Quicktime format.

I already had the Perian Codec in my computer, but I reinstalled it.

I didn't change any setting, just chose Quicktime Movie.

Maybe it is. I'd like to point out that I don't have a problem exporting video from Live 9, so it's possible this is a problem specific to your video set-up. I think the video function in Live is very simplistic, but I don't see any issues for what it does.

The answer for your export problems is likely found in your use of Perian 1.3.2, that was updated last on Dec 11 2013 and must be regarded as abandoned. That's five years ago and the world moved on. I'm quoting user Macinman on macupdate.com:

"I loved Perian when it was an active and developed project, very nice add-on for quicktime. But really today, with the advance of media support file formats, etc who really uses quicktime as an everyday player anymore. There are much better third party ones with support for almost any media file out there".

It's great this works now for you but it could be a good idea to see if there are better modern ways to work with video codecs usable in Live. Actually it would be a good idea if Ableton had some updated modern ideas too in the official help section.

Good point mikb, I am not a video specialist, but I often have to send video exports to clients, and being able to send good quality video is part of of the job.

This is something I've always wanted to learn more about as well. While I understand what video codecs and containers are, I have no idea why you'd pick one over the other. What settings when creating these files have the great impact on quality.

Any experts want to share some video knowledge with us audio types?

I'm pretty sure Ableton leaves all decoding and encoding to Apple QuickTime. So whatever capability you can find and extend there is what Live will be able to use. There may be some limitations that I'm not aware of, but largely you can start learning this by looking at QuickTime and its role. Unfortunately it appears Live won't use all codecs that you add to macOS itself. At least these aren't available for export.

In general I have rendered a lot of videos using ableton live and I have never had a problem. Then for the first time today I had this issue. Looked it up online and seems it is a common issue. In my case I was using images, not video, so I am not sure if it is the same or not. I was able to solve it, maybe someone else will find this info useful. For me the issue was as follows:

1. I opened the image in photoshop.
2. I export the image using a non-standard size (1778 X 1000) with a standard aspect ratio.
3. I put the image in Ableton live and export it using quicktime h.264 and I tried a few sizes (1778 X 1000, 1280×720, 1920×1080)
4. Final video export is distorted.
5. I go back to photoshop
6. I export the image using a standard size (1920×1080)
7. I put the image in Ableton live and export it using quicktime h.264 and I export it 1920×1080
8. Final video export is ok.
9. I tried a few more non-standard and standard size, same results.

For me it had to do with the size of the image I was using in Ableton.
