Automation vs Modulation envelopes
As you may know, in 10.1, it's easier to switch between using Automation and Modulation Envelopes. However, despite looking at both Ableton and other documentation, I still cannot grok the difference between the two modes, especially in terms of what it actually sounds like. Could someone explain, in words of one syllable (or less!) this gap in my knowledge?

Automation is absolute.
E.g., let's say you'll draw a filter curve that goes from 200 Hz to 1000 Hz.
Boom. That's what it'll do.
In addition to that, you can draw a modulation curve; it's relative.
It'll add to or subtract from that filter curve / the filter's current state.
Manual p. 316:
"Whereas automation envelopes define the value of a control at any given point in time, modulation envelopes can only infuence this defined value."
I'm showing this in my Live Basics video (in my sig).
