Seemless Midi Notation Editor View

Post by miekwave » Wed Dec 02, 2015 4:05 am

Please add notation editor that works natively with LIVE so we don't need to use Finale or Sibelius
Image

* Staff view up to 8-12 staffs at a time
* Add 'Notation View Toggle' where we have Show-Hide 'I/O', 'Return/Send', 'Mute/Solo/Mixer Section', 'Track Delay', 'X-Fade' - new Addition would be 'Notation' (Hotkey CTRL + ALT + N or Mac equiv)
* Notation toggle enables or disables track to be converted into staff notation view with the following drop down options
Staff Clef Type: Treble Clef (default), Grand Staff, Bass Clef, Alto Clef, Tenor Clef
Staff Key Signature: b / #
Staff Note Resolution: 1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16,1/32 (etc)
Staff Notes or Grid: Yes/No (Notes displays typical notes, Grid shows you Piano Roll style notes on Staff line)

* Convert MIDI Clip or Arrange View MIDI performance into Staff
* Bars are numbered
* Copy/Paste Staff MIDI to Arrange view and Vice Versa

Productivity Features
* Enable/Disable Staff view on Preferences menu
* Enable Staff Toggle same way you enable X-Fade or Delay on a track
* View Staff View with CTRL+SHIFT+TAB, TAB to return to Arrange/Clip view or SHIFT+TAB to return to normal Piano Roll view
* Staff Toggle ON puts the track into Staff View, Staff Toggle OFF removes the track on Staff View
* MIDI clips have 'Simple Staff' view option (Simple Staff is just one line only)
* Easily adjust each tracks Key Signature, Staff Resolution, and Grid View mode
* All Piano Roll has View 'Solo Staff' view option that toggles between Piano Roll and Simple Staff

Not meant to replace Finale/Sibelus - just a seamless way to integrate into live editing using Live Workflow

I personally would really love to see this. I Found this thread while searching on google to see if there was a setting within ableton that would let me do this. Big ups @miekwave for your thoughtfully and well explained comment on how this should be implemented.

The biggest headache for me is not lack of scoring, but that you can't have two clips in midi edit together.

I often end up having to temporarily add a bunch of instruments to a single rack, then use key chain ranges and midi pitch shifters to separate them to different midi note ranges just so i can score 2 or 3 parts together - the usual scenario for me is solo violin over a solo cello etc.

Once done, then I end up separating them back into separate clips and racks. All in all - quite annoying.

So, while I don't personally care much for actual score editing I would be very happy to be edit 2 or more clips together with each being vertically stacked in the note editor with trivial copy/cut/paste drag/drop between them . Each clip should have its own selectable visible note range as typically I only need to see a couple of octaves in each instrument (if that) and fold should still work.

While this is great for classical type editing - a variation that would be great for EDM/complextro type editing would write a melody in a clip. Have other clips stacked in the editor and you can drag select some notes then push C+Up to push those notes from the current clip to the same place in the next clip up (or CTRL+Down) for the next clip down. Like moving notes by an octave within the note editor. This would make chopping up midi into separate clips to drive different synths so quick and easy. I could even see myself using this in string arranging as well - take some note - push them from violin to cello, then shift up/down to dump them in the right octave for the instrument - all while the clips are playing.

The complextro scenario is one where I don't mind having all notes in one clip and using a mod-wheel driving a chain selector to chop it on the fly, but still it would be really good to have a fast to use multi-clip editor.

Im quite happy if a stacked editor is a 3rd view/window as I don't suppose it would work well in its current location. While were at it, there is probably merit in stacked editing of audio clips as well for chopping them up, replicating automation etc.
Nothing to see here - move along!

yeah, that´s the reason I decided to stop using Live in 2017. as much as I loved Ableton Live when it was new and exciting I just realized that it was getting me nowhere really at some point. Live is great to start a quick sketch of something but when it comes down to putting my sketches in a more musical context utilizing all the compositional concepts I tought myself in the past decade it just doesn´t work. unfortunately bitwig is not up to the task yet either even tough it has that one feature that I so much desire. It´s just a pain in the ass really. so right now I´m back in Logic Pro / proTools :| and considering to upgrade my Cubase License as the new version looks promising.

Would love to go from Live Intro to Suite, but the lack of a music notation editor in a music editing program is holding us back. We're considering Reaper instead, because we really need music notation.
