Is there a quick way to see whether I've got the VST2 or the VST3 version of a 3rd party plugin in the device chain?

Not sure but i think vst3 only works with live 10.1 and if you have an older version of live installed too, you can try the vst in that version of live.
I even think that vst3 plugins appear in a bigger size in the effects panel than the vst2 ones. It comes with a sidechain midi input i think. You can even disable vst3 or vst2 folders in the prefrences menu. There is a new category called plugins. Hope that helps! Have fun!
