Key/MIDI mapping How to?

I want to map the TAP button onto a MIDI or key, but am not getting any MIDI through and although some objects see the keyboard, the TAP button doesn't.
Am I missing something obvious?

Running Live as stand-alone on G4 and 10.2.6
MIDI in from Unitor 8 via gPort.

i can map the tap button just fine.
key mapping only seems to work with letter keys,
so no= tab, shift, `, ~, fn, ctrl, option, command, etc

my setup: powerbook g4 550, live 2.0.3, 10.2.6
