Replicating This Sound-

Post by Zelda123 » Thu Nov 28, 2019 6:13 pm

For my understanding and learning purposes only, could someone point me in the right direction as to how the leading melody sound is created? It appears to be some kind of bell or bongo? I'm getting no where on my own trying to figure it out.

Try getting the tuning of the melody by isolating the melody using this site - https://melody.ml/

In terms of sound presets, I would recommend searching for something under Mallets, Plucked, or percussive.

Check this video on how to replicate sounds. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwf8R29Kcb4

Also remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, just be good enough to enjoy :-)

I think that sound is a Marimba, balafon or one of its relatives, a tuned wood or stone bar instrument similar to a xylophone that’s played with mallets. The closest thing to that sound I can think of is a Basque instrument called a txalaparta, but there’s obviously been some processing done on the basic sound.

Aww cheers both thanks so much! Really appreciate it.

As a total beginner, when creating a melody using something percussive, would you insert it into a drum rack with the kick and clap, or would you guys use Sampler to get piano roll? Sorry for the noob question.

Thanks

Brill that website has isolated the sound, sounds like one of the instruments mentioned. Any ideas what type of effects have been used? Can't hear any reverb. Tried compressing and all that stuff but can't come close. So stuck! lol. Any ideas? Help

I went through Ableton Suites sound presets and under Mallets I heard a couple Balafon presets which sounded really close too.. I can hear a bit of a slap back delay or a late reflection (50ms) reverb on the Melody not much in the way of compression, but possibly a High pass filter... Also, I think the song is in an exotic mode, maybe Dorian or something, Relative to my ears :)

Thanks seriously that is so helpful!

So overwhelming getting into this tech house/ techno groovy production stuff! I've realised (that at least for me anyway) I'm not going to actually learn anything just messing round without fully understanding what everything does! So understanding how this melody/sound is created is going to be a step in the correct direction. Otherwise I'm not going to progress. One step at TIME. Reminds me of when I was teaching myself how to beatmatch djing lol.

This kind of instrument is best treated as you would a keyboard. A piano works by hitting strings with hammers, but they’re mechanical and hidden inside it. Marimbas, Vibes etc. have the hammers on the “outside” and no keys but they’re melody/chording instruments not drums.

Use the piano roll or a sequencer that lets you set note pitch.
