Anyone know how to loop without activating warp

Post by anomimonis » Fri Sep 16, 2005 8:23 am

Ive been searching for a way to use Wavepad [url=http://wavepad.com] as a simple sound sampler; which is the most convinent way for me to sample digital sounds. I open wave pad first without even thinking about live then i alway start palying around with wavepad recording whatever i put into the input of the sound card via midi with some beat machines keyboards and synths.

THEN i start thinkingabout LIVE. With Live open Wavepad loses sound(using asio drivers). Whilst previously i had assumably saved what i had recorded. Then i drag that file into lives clip view as an audio clip, but i dont want it warped or looped but if i wanted it looped i would have to activate warp.

The reason for trying this method is i want that audio file to be exactly how i recorded with no intent on changing it unless i took samples from it that i wanted to manipulate and reloop into. Im not the best mucisian so my talent lies between capturing that perfect couple of minutes when i get what im feeling recorded. Anyways. When i click on edit in the clip view to open ext editor(wavepad) to take a piece of the sample out and create new sample, save then load it back into live, but, when i load it back into live the tempo is drasticly changed then i am forced to warping that sample. just to loop it.

any suggetions worth thinking about

Follow actions.
Just set a clip unwarped to repeat itself.

Use the clip launch setting. Set up the follow action to play again after the duration of the loop.

I do think they should allow the normal 'loop' button to be used though, as it is more intuitive than the follow action method. I think that confuses a lot of people

I think that you are very right about being intuitive. Maybe being able to deactivate auto tempo recognition. Then you would be able to set what you wanted to be the tempo as sort of a master warp tempo, but then i think there would have to more spots in the graphics of the wave to put warp markers. I say this because once you zoom in deep enough you see bit gaps between warp markers. point=more warp makers

Yeah I came across the same thing
I think they should make it possible to just loop something say in the arrange mode using the markers so you dont actually warp the clip at all.
Because sometimes you may not want to warp it if you are recording something as it should sound (If you know what I mean)

follow actions

Post by btovsky » Tue Sep 27, 2005 3:51 pm

anyone have a quick & simple way to determine clip length for follow actions if your clip is a non-rhythmic crossfade-looped longer file? i've got quite a few clips that i'm using for a live sound/video piece using field recordings (so using warp is a no-no, as they get mangled) and i need to use follow actions to set them to loop at exactly the clip length. trial and error is driving me nuts, there's got to be a simpler way.
thanks

you can activate warping anyway and set the warp bpm equal to your master tempo...this way you can loop more easily, and nothing gets pulled out of context!

warping affects your sound for the worse whether it is at the original BPM or not.

If I record a loop of me playing guitar at 120bpm and warp to loop I can hear the artefacts, very clearly in beats 'chugging' on notes longer than the quantize value (eg quantize of 16, sustaining chord .. chug chug chug).

obviously I could use "complex", but that uses a lot of CPU for what is essentially a straight sample loop, something that should be the very easiest thing to do.

we should be able to hit loop on an un-warped sample.

once you activate warp the sound clip is processed so it can be beat-matched, which compromises the quality of the sound, particularly if it is a textural, non-rhythmic ambience. i need the clips to loop without processing, so follow actions are the way to go, but my clips don't conform to an even measure. my assumption is that i will have to play with the tempo/bpm to "fit" the clip to a measure break, but i need to do this on a clip-by-clip basis, as they are all various lengths. there must be an easier way!

I also think letting us loop unwarped clips with the regular loop button would be great. I will experiment with follow actions but it would make more sense to just click the button.

There's no reason to degrade the sound quality just to loop something at the same BPM....Especially if you're composing a song from scratch and not using bits of other songs, prefabbed drum loops, etc.

Anyway, at least it can be done currently in some shape or form. You can also just copy paste the clip over & over in the arrangement, no?

I agree this would be a nice feature.

i'm playing live, and improvising as well, so i don't use arrangement very often.
