I really appreciate all the responses. I know when it comes to my mixing environment I need bass traps. I have hard corners behind and 2.5 feet to the L-R of my speakers. The speakers are not right up against the wall - they are on rubberized stands that are part of a Quicklok studio desk. The wall is close behind which makes me think the Mackies would be good because they feature a function switch that accomodate for a scenario like this. Anyone know anything about that?
Does anybody know, or have a link to information on what kind of room sizes are best suited to monitor/driver sizes?
This site
http://www.realtraps.com/videos.htm might have something for us. I'm going to check out the video. This guy Ethan Winer is supposed to be
the man when it comes to acoustics.

Boston CR08's They do the job and are farily flat. I would like some good Aleisis Studio's though they are not in the budget right now.

Mains = HR824 pair powered
Sub = custom built precision sub with Mackie 1400i amp
Center = M-Audio BX5 single powered
Rear = RCA surround speaker pair with Hafler TA1100 amp
Reference 1 = Auratone Cube pair with Tascam PA-30 amp
Reference 2 = Yamaha NS10MS pair with Hafler TA1100 amp
Reference 3 = Yamaha bookshelf pair with Hafler TA1600 amp
Yeah it's a bit much, but I loves me some speakers...

Anybody using Tapco s8's? Genelec 8030's?
I'm looking into these at the moment and I'm puzzled. The Genelecs are more expensive but smaller. What to choose...?

Genelec 1029a and Genelec 1091a sub. A pretty small system but sound crisp and accurate and pack quite a punch for their diminutive size.

I was using the BX-8s, then added BX-5as for rear surround.
I liked the accuracy, especially in the vocal mids, and tighter bottom end (!), of the BX-5as so much that I swapped them around. The BX-8s seem to have a big hole in the middle of the audio spectrum. They're my rear speakers now.
I guess that's what can happen when you have a bigger woofer and no dedicated midrange driver. When checking my mix, I'm using the BX-5s mostly, then toggling to the BX-8s to check the low end.
It seems to work for me, but I'm only mixing for my own live performance with FOH Mackie SR1232s and SRM450s in the rear.
yes, this is the problem of big bigger woofers (B2031 too). the best solution is about 6" woofers (f.e. B2030A has 6 and 3/4 or something like this)

EVENT 20/20 BAS V2
These are freakily FLAT! They take some getting used to, but that is how it should be. Makes sonic decision making more consistent- because they translate pure sonic reality. IMO monitors should NOT add any colour to the sound. In the end, I find a balance between the EVENT's, a crap pair of EDIROL 10 watt monitors and my car stereo- when the mix translates well between the 3, it sounds good on any system.
