Live Recording Project - File exchange and song length change

Post by khartung » Sun Feb 09, 2020 7:00 pm

I'm in the middle of recording project and baffled by some song length changes during the process of exchanging files.
This is what I am seeing.

1. I create the master set in Live, record all my parts, etc. In one instance, my set BPM is 162
2. I expert my arrangement to wav, send it to my duo partner
3. He drags my wav part into his master set and records his drum parts over it. He also sets his BPM to 162
4. He exports his parts to wav and sends to me.
5. I drag his part into my master set and his part is longer than mine! As in 8 seconds or so. All the parts are there.

Any ideas?

put these two renders into session view side by side and post a screen shot.

you can render silence at the end, did you listen to them? did you put them side by side and listen? look at them?

Screen shot here. You can see that my percussionist's export of my track is longer than my original.
I had him send me his settings. In his Preferences under Record/Warp/Launch, he has the Auto Warp long samples selected.
Could that be it?

thanks for the screen shot. yeah, can't tell by looking at them what's going on. sorry, nothing comes to mind, maybe I'll try reproducing this later if I need a break.

do they sound like they drift apart? :?

First, turn Warp off inside the clips of both versions you are showing in the picture. Are they the same length now? If yes, then one of them was being warped at the wrong speed by Live. It means nothing is wrong, it happens all the time for long clips. Something you have to look closely at each time you import things back into your project. (Note: If the speed of the imported clips and project are the same, it's even best to leave Warp off the imported clips for best sound quality and not to run into any timing issues).

However, if the above two clips are still a different length after you have turned warp off, then that can be a few reasons. One of them may mean that your drummer imported your file at the wrong speed - - most likely Live Warped it incorrectly at import - and then recorded their drums at this wrong speed. The project tempo is only half the equation, the imported files - if warped - have to be at the correct tempo and start point as well.
