When I preview midi files in the Ableton browser it sounds awful! Searching for an answer I found some *really* old posts that described a basic sine wave file that Live uses for previewing MIDI that can't be changed?
Has this been fixed? Google doesn't reveal any recent complaints, so I'm hoping there is a solution and I'm just missing it.
As a Reaper user, whenever you select a MIDI file from the browser it previews through the currently selected track. I would LOVE to find out that you could somehow do something like that in Ableton Live too.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, same situation here. Was using Reaper, Cubase and now trying out Ableton. How can midi be played through a selected VST tracks? It has been 10 years with this funny issue as I googled. Is Ableton team on drugs or they get sponsored by some mouse manufacturer to supply drag&drop features?

Dragging it to the track is the only option I’m aware of.

Looks like you can search where the file is located and change it to a default sound of your choice. I know you can do this with the metronome.
Anyway.. The file location is explained here>>>>
"And now in 2018 we have a solution!
Just search file named ”MidiPreHear.aif” and replace that file with any .aif file containing wanted preview sound sample. It was as ”easy” as this all the time"
