m2 / SSD - where to put what ?

Post by beatz01 » Thu Mar 05, 2020 2:27 pm

Hi,

so i'm planning to buy a new Laptop for exclusively Ableton, and one of the models that i think would be suitable has an additional slot for a m2 SSD. As i'm planning to swap the normal HDD for a SSD anyways *and* to put in a m2 SSD as well, my question is:

Should i put the OS (probably Win 10) and Ableton on the m2 and samples etc on the normal SSD or the other way around or a whole different approach altogether ?

Any hints are appreciated, thanks !

I have my OS (Win 10) and Ableton and Reason on one m2-SSD and my samples, songs etc. on an other m2-SSD. All my backups are on a third drive - a normal HDD (2TB).
Akai Force, Soundcraft UI24R, ESI M4U eX, Reason 12, Live Suit 10, Presonus Eris E8 and Monitor Station V2, Akai MPK mini MK3, Korg N1, Yamaha RM1x & Behringer TD3MO and RD9

If it's an M.2 SSD and not an M.2 NVME then it will make no difference at all where you put what as it will just run at SSD speed as your SSD will.

Would simply come down to how you want to manage your OS and storage drive. Only spec you may want to check is the read/write speed of each and the best quality one use for the OS drive. In general practice most people will choose to install software on the OS drive and sample/library content on a second drive.
