Troubleshooting: Audio cracks after some time working on a project

Post by Orca123 » Mon Mar 23, 2020 12:26 pm

Like the title says, my audio starts cracking as if it would be clipping or the CPU would be maxed out. But neither is the case. Even if I put a limiter on every channel and let only one audio channel play I get the audio cracks, even when the CPU-meter is on 10% or less.

I got a temporary fix though. When I switch some settings like the audio output device from headphone to speaker and then back to the initial setting again, the audio cracks go away for a while. But after working for let´s say 10min more on the project the cracks come back. I can also switch the sample-rate from 44100 to 22050 and back again, and the audio is fine until the cracks come back again. I also tried fiddling around with the latency which seems to only be temporarily fixing the problem aswell.

I run Ableton Live 10 on a HP Z-Book (Model hsn-113 c-5) with Windows 10.

I can´t find an answer to the problem nor any similar problem on the Internet. Please help!

Are you using an audio interface? If you have wi fi on, disable the device itself from device manager and see if you still have pops, clicks Download a free program called latency mon, and run it, then post the results here.

In the past I've seen this with poorly written drivers for an audio interface, or the interface not getting enough power for some reason. Double check you're using the latest drivers.

I have this very same issue. I am using the latest drivers, though not a dedicated interface. My workaround is exactly the same - switch just about any setting having to do with sampling in ASIO4ALL. It does not appear to matter to much whether I'm increasing or decreasing the sample size and changing settings unrelated to sample size also seems to do the trick. It is though the driver or Ableton itself gets into a bad state and it takes a kick in the driver to reset it to normal operation.

Help?

Yes as above definately acquire an Audio interface, and avoid A4all.

Recommend using Focusrite Scarletts as a decent starting point.
