did I really misunderstood how the audio to midi thing works? (Ableton told me so)
Hi everybody!
Just posted a similar thing in the max subforum, but I like to separate subjects instead of mixing them in one thread.
So, here I want to go deeper in the audio to midi feature of Ableton (which I understand it's not related to max).
I'm still trying to decide between Ableton and Bitwig and at the moment to be honest I'm very very close to pull the trigger on Bitwig (I've found two angels who made me a wonderful offer for each of the DAW).
The only reason I see for me to stick with Ableton is the audio to midi thing. Ok, there is max too, but, well, that's a bit too advanced for me, and I find already the basic functions of any DAW intimidating.
My idea of how this thing work, an idea which was confirmed by some videos, is that I could record my voice in an audio track, sing, beatbox, do whatever, and this feature would have extrapolated different informations about pitch, volume, velocity, duration etc, and converted them in midi which I could use to trigger a synth or a drum etc.
This guy from the US sales team told me "I'm very good with ableton and I can tell you, this is not possible".
So. Is he right?
How does the audio to midi work in ableton?
Thanks!

You say "Stick with Ableton" which leads me to believe you have it already? Just try it out if so. When you right click audio In your menu you have convert Harmony/Melody or Rhythm to midi, so it's contextual based on the audio part. The type of instrument can have a bit impact as well but I can definitely convert say a clean acoustic guitar pretty easily. If you try to convert distorted guitar your results may vary.

No I don't have it.
I meant, stick to the original plan of buying Live.
I've just discovered Bitwig few days ago.
I did download the trial of both.
But well. I don't understand anything yet.
So, I'm really like, abc.
That's why I'm asking.
So, are you talking of real time conversion (like imitone, which I've just discovered right now), or of audio track to midi track?
And which values are converted? Only the pitch, or also duration, volume etc?
Cheers

Ableton's audio to MIDI doesn't work like Imitone, it works in already recorded audio.

(Chapters 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4)
AFAIK, Bitwig doesn't have audio to MIDI.

I don't know how good he is with Ableton, but he's definitely not very good with Live then!KleinAberFein wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 7:37 pmThis guy from the US sales team told me "I'm very good with ableton and I can tell you, this is not possible".
Live does indeed offer audio to midi conversion, it's not realtime though.

Audio to midi is a feature although I never really use it and cant comment on the quality of the conversion.

Hi!
I've discovered a couple of real time options.
I know there is something in Max too.
But, well.
I decided for Bitwig.
Nothing is forever, so, maybe in the future I'll come to Ableton again.
But for now, it felt right to me so...
Thank you for the support!

Hi KleinAberFein!
You said you discovered a few real time options for Audio to Midi.....
Could you share? Trying to get it going, as precise as possible...... Found Tom Cosm's racks, though doesn't seem to work.....
Thanks a lot, kindest greetings from Amsterdam!
Heiko

Oh, real time. About all I know about is MIDI Guitar. ACE Studio does the best job of any non-real time I know of.
