KERNEL PANIC (grey mac error screen) w/ my LIVE 5!!!

Post by adriano » Thu Sep 29, 2005 5:37 am

so....

I bought LIVE 5 last week and i must admit that
I have been EXTREMELY disappointed at LIVE 5 erroring/bugs many many times
on my Mac G4 titanium powerbook using OSX 10.3.9.

the regular bugs (crashing multiple times) are one thing..
but...most of all....my concern is that i have got a KERNEL PANIC screen 2x now!
the 1st I was using LIVE 5 & it just came up (the grey screen with "you must restart
your computer" in 4 different languages), i restarted & it was then fine.

the 2nd time (tonight.....during my biggest music project/deadline for a remix
of Cheb I Sabbah).....this grey KERNEL PANIC screen returned & would not go
away with 3 Restarts.
i tried holding down C, then a box came up about not finding original os discs, i
pressed ok, now i have returned to my desktop with no KERNEL PANIC.

but....i am very very concerned about this KERNEL PANIC being caused from
"damaged new software" as Apple's website states:

http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/2/#3

it must be LIVE 5 because i have not installed any new hardware or other software, and this happens when i'm using this program only.

i must say that the free cracked Live 4 version is WAY more stable. not
that I've used it....but....i hear online that it is less buggy still!

it sucks, because i really wanted to support Ableton & look fwd to future
improvements....but at the present time.....this is a major setback
in my life!!!

please help if there is a method to solve this madness

Maybe the cracked version is interfering with the legal version?

try deleting it

4 is generally more stable than 5, cracked or not.

Are you able to render your tracks that have live 5 instruments and re-do the project in 4? I've had to do that with my Live 5 projects that kept crashing.

download the Live 5.0.2b7 beta in this section of the forum.
and if you don't want to mess with the beta, try re-downloading the 5.0.1 installer file from the downloads or upgrades page.

considering you've admitted to having a cracked version of Live 4 on your machine, i cannot help but to wonder how many cracked third party plug-ins are on your machine as well. These certainly do not make it easy to trouble shoot your problem, nor do they offer any kind of warranties toward stability on your system.

remove any illegal softwares from your machine FIRST, then test your machine for stability and reliability. otherwise you'll just constantly be chasing your tail trying to find out why your machine doesn't work.

any more advice???

Post by adriano » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:47 am

ok....

so now...my computer will not start up properly either by holding
SHIFT or C key. both ways, and not holding anything, takes
it to the KERNEL PANIC screen (w/ my desktop screensaver in the
background, but no folders showing on desktop).

this is beyond me & self-help now unless any of you have
advice to get back to my desktop.
if i can get there.....i will follow the above posts advice
about redownloading the 5.0.1 again & getting rid of
that cracked Live 4 my friend gave me. maybe that's causing
the errors, although from what i've read online it's not an issue
to run both.

i hope that Live 6 comes out real soon because having
4 be more stable than 5 is very unsettling.

strange times....

teaching me....my 1st bought software & it's ultra buggy?
my cracked copy working better than my $600 CAN one?

strange times....
not strange at all.
karma is just a bitch like that.

i hope you get it worked out.
start by removing any extra ram installed in your system.
do you have applecare?

I haven't heard any reports of kernel panics on Live 5. OS X keeps logs in the event of a kernel panic that can identify whether or not it IS in fact Live that is the culprit. Look for your panic log and send it to ableton support, along with any crash logs you may have. They'll be able to identify what's causing the instability (ie is it Live itself, or a plugin that you're using, or a crash at the OS level...)

this just keeps getting stranger & stranger...

I was able to FINALLY start up my computer by holding
C key. I realized my friend had put a CD-RW in the drive
& ejected it. I put it in my desktop to see what was on the
disk.....

and.....lo & behold......KERNEL PANIC on her desktop
which does not have LIVE 5!!!
just from putting that cd-rw in!!!

thing is .....that must be some stange anomaly because
the Kernel Panic on my laptop always happend while
running or quitting LIVE 5 , and only after 4 days of
installing it.

now that i can again reach my files ok I am wondering
what to do next on my laptop.

can someone please spell out the correct steps to take?
should i
1) erase my old Live 4
2) trash my Live 5.0.1
3) disk utility-repair permissions
4) mac janitor
5) redownload Live 5.0.1 (would i need to install by 5 disc 1st
or just go to website from nothing?)

if you can help in the order of this or other steps
i should take that would be much appreciated.

i've sent the panic.log to Ableton & Apple Bug Reporter and
awaiting their advice.

strength in commUNITY

what to do now?

i've run Disk Utility & Mac Janitor.
have not trashed any applications yet.

i tried Running Reason. opens up and cannot
find my built in Sound Card (in Audio Prefs in Reason,
no options....just NO SOUND CARD)

i went to Mac OSX System Preferences / Sound
& "no output (or input) devices found"

is this the 1st of many issues to result from
Kernel Panic on my computer?

should i just take this to a Mac specialist now
& get it cleaned up?

is it over my head?

or are there more self help methods i should
be doing?

should i just reformat my harddrive & start over?
if i only had an external drive i would backup files
& do that.

ayy yaii yaii!

(don't worry, i'm unusually calm amidst this chaos...
mabye because i went through other big problems in
my life the last few weeks & don't have anymore energy
for more. about to the breaking point. maybe thinking
of getting some new hobbies that don't use computers???)

maybe i'm supposed to take a break from electronic music for
awhile??? get outside more or something....

the Ableton techs have stopped sending me email support.
their last email reply was that this must have been caused
by my faulty CD-RW or sound files that had errors in my crashlog?

Could this really have been caused by bad CD-RW's?

i wish somebody had some answers for me.
I can't afford to take it to the shop right now.
it's just sitting here, waiting for Ableton email support
or advice from one of you.

Should I reset my PRAM? (a friend suggested this...)

Save yourself the pain....
Hook another mac up to it with firewire. Copy your files....
And restore your mac.

Cracks are a bitch. But it could be a cd-rw too though.
I once had one locked inside my imac g4. And that caused a kernel panic that i couldn't fix.
At the time i didn't have a second mac to fix the other one though. So i had to send it to the shop. This is covered by your warranty if you still have one.

Live should AFAIK in itself not be able to cause a kernel panic, as it's simply not messing with the bits that can cause kernel panics. Soundcard and other drivers and PACE copyprotection (may it rot in hell) of other software are much more likely culprits.

I've never seen a kernel panic, though, so I can't really help you. If you have any extra RAM, discs, optical drives or other 3rd party hardware installed (like PCI cards), try removing it and see what happens.

Suggestions:

- Remove and reinstall all your RAM and PCI cards.
- Clean all the dust out of your computer(using compressed air)
- Run a diagonistic program like techtool pro to check all your hardware
- Backup all your files to a second HD, wipe your drive and reinstall OS X. Then Reinstall your software.

But again, really, you're not giving us much information to work with. If you could post your panic log that would certainly help. Caveat emptor: Software can make your system unstable if it's either not up-to-date or it's cracked.
