Ableton 10 Questions

Post by davidpag » Sat Mar 28, 2020 6:58 pm

Hello,

I was slow moving to Ableton 10 as 9 has been amazing to me for so long.. That said, finally made the jump and the adjustment is well under way!

Planning to post general questions here whilst moving along and incorporating 10 into the workflow. If this isn't the appropriate location I will happily post elsewhere; either way hoping all the amazing users within this forum can possibly answer questions that for the most will probably be general in nature.

Question 1:
Noticed that some buttons when activated will change to a bright yellow/orange in color but some go from a dark grey to light grey. Example: The Utility Plug-in Phase buttons turn yellow/orange when activated but the Mono and Bass Mono buttons go from dark grey to Light Grey. Is there any particular reason for this? Color use within setups Ive noticed over the years is very important in workflow (consistent colors for example for quickly locating tracks, etc.) and this grey colored activation opposed to a bright color has me regularly doing double takes to make sure it's on lol. In 9, pretty much everything was bright colored when activated. Ofc I can get use to this in time. Thank you in advance :)

If it is grey it means the control is not applicable to the current signal chain. You can still switch the control on/off and the grey colour changes, but it is not affecting the audio as you would have other settings enabled which overwrite these settings. If you enable the Mono switch for instance, this creates a mono mix of the entire signal so the "Bass Mono" is now no longer useful since it's purpose is to make any frequency below the frequency setting a mono signal.

Works in the same way in L9 too

Question 2:
The Solo button when off is grey, switched on its completely blue. A few of the Solo buttons (when not activated) are half grey on top and half blue on the bottom diagonally?

That would be because it is the solo button on a group track and some sub tracks are soloed

Question 3:
Automation using the "A" on the computer keyboard is not working. Going to the View Menu dropdown and selecting "Automation Mode" works. Perhaps I have somehow unmapped this key in the one day of using 10. Do I have to remap this and where exactly would I map "A" to?

Question 4:
Fades grips are supposed to be always active on the audio clips but unfortunately they are not showing whether automation mode is on or off.

Question 3 & 4 resolved. Built-in Midi Keyboard has to be deactivate to toggle Automation On/Off. Fades show with automation off.
