Using warp to create artifacts

Post by thegoatboy » Sun Mar 29, 2020 11:04 pm

Hello

I've seen mention in a few tutorials (cubase and protools) where the producer has used the DAW timeshift functionality to time compress the audio and then expand it back to its original size resulting in some nice audio artefacts.

Is this possible in ableton?

I've tried it with warp, but compressing and expanding doesn't introduce any artefacts.

I've tried cropping the sample and stretching it back out, but that is too extreme.

Can it be done in ableton?

Of course! That's almost the only use I get from warp; it's a fantastic sound design tool
You need to play with the different warp modes and dedicated settings, and some of them are even automatable (i.e in Tones and Texture modes).

You probably want to freeze/flatten or consolidate (otherwise it is non-destructive) before expanding back to the original size, to get artifacts.
