New question for EQing

Post by dusty4444 » Sun Apr 26, 2020 2:10 pm

Hello,

So I would still consider my self a newb even though I have bene producing for a long time. Life , family etc so I still struggle with mastering as most do but my question is:

It def seems like the more sound you add you kind of have to make the decisions on what you want to stand out. So I have a project where I have a drum channel with kick,hi hat, snare and shaker, Vocal channel,Bongo channel, a melody/Lead channel, another kind of arpeggiated bass, and another vocal sample channel ,

If you have two instruments that are in the same Freq rang, Your melody , you vocal and the bongos but you want them all to stand out how do you EQ that and without making it sound to Narrow or filtery? Sorry if the questions is a bit confusing but what I have found with all my tracks through out the years is that they didnt have enough elements . When I start to get it where I want I find that i have to bury some of my sounds. Is there any good tutorials on how EQ numerous mid rang instruments ?

Also is it bad to use side chaining ? What if I have two or three instruments Side chaining to kind of set a priority on what I want to be the most important? Im sure there is a Audio Engineer cringing right now but its seemed to work. .

The ‘Mixdowns’ guide by Tarekith, one of our illustrious moderators, is an excellent starting point: http://innerportalstudio.com/guides/.

Also good (and rather inexpensive) are two little books available from Amazon:
  • ‘Music Habits: 101 Production Tips for Computer Musicians’ by Jason Timothy
  • ‘The Art of Equalization’ by Thomas Juth
MacBook Pro, macOS Sequoia, 2.3GHz i7-1068NG7, 32GB – Live Suite 12.1, Max 8.6.5, Scarlett 4i4
