PDC on sends

Post by astar » Fri Sep 30, 2005 10:41 pm

Sorry if this has been brought up but I did a quick search and couldn't find it:

Say I have this in a set:
Track 1: Audio track with send A knob set to 0db.
Track 2: Audio track with input coming from Track A
Track A: Return track with a plugin that incurs latency

Even if PDC is on when I route and record the output of Track A into Track 2 there is noticeable delay and have to adjust warp markers to compensate. Does PDC not work if routing from a Return Track to an Audio track?

My workaround for now is to just set Track 1 output to Sends only and then Resample in another audio track and that seem to work fine.

Just curious, does PDC work different for return tracks or something?

thanks!
Astar

I dont know the answer but i had to say that your name brings back fond childhood memories of that annoying war amps commercial with the robot that could "put his arm back on, but you can't... so play safe!"

Ahhh, good times.

you shouldnt have to adjust the warp settings to get it to sync.

if the returns are adding more latency (and this isn't happening with my setup however), then all you should have to do is adjust the Track Delay on the Return channel to return everything in sync.

I just tested the same setup you described with PSP Vintage Warmer on the return track and it syncs fine - as PDC should. and VW adds about 12ms of latency.
disabling PDC shows just how out of sync it would be WITHOUT PDC.

So this leads me to one conclusion:
The plug-in you are using in the Return track is not reporting its latency to the host properly, therefore the host cannot properly compensate for the delay.

So i have to ask, which plug-in are you using in the return?

hey timothyallan, you got that commercial in australia!? That's awesome.. it's legendary here in Canada :) And there's actually an Astar statue in this office building close to where I live!

Anyway, back on topic:

AdamJay,

An easy way to test this is with Compressor II set to a 10ms look ahead on the return track.

Set output of Track 1 to SENDS ONLY, and Send A knob to 0db
Set input of Track 2 to Return A
Arm and record a 1 bar clip in Track 2 while playing a clip in Track 1

Zoom into the clip, audio from return track was recorded into Track 2 but there is latency there. If it's a drum loop the snare will be behind the beat.

Now instead, try setting input of Track 2 to "Resampling".
Record a clip and zoom in on it... same audio from return track was recorded but this time it's dead on the beat.

So there's no issue with latency compensation in the Return tracks until you route it to an audio track (?????)

Hehehe, nah I actually am from Canada, I've just been in Aus for a few years now. (Kelowna and Calgary)

WTF is there a statue of Astar?? that would rock!

Now if only people here would understand me when I say "Ahhh, I smell burnt toast!!" and start to have a seizure :)

Time to ressurect this thread!

Ironically, after not having this problem initially, I had this happen last night. I routed one of my return tracks to an audio track and whammo, I had a nice half second delay all of a sudden. Routed the return to the master and all is well again.

It's my live set, so i have a heap of plugins on the master buss, but not many on the channels, and no wierd synthedit type ones, they are all well known plugs that work great otherwise.

Could anyone that has an existing project with some return tracks give this a try with 5.0.3?

Cheers,
Tim

I have been getting this to. Even with live's built in effects and hardly using any other plugins. I even tried disabling all the ones that were unnecessary for the return part I wanted to record.

Most recently it happened when I was trying to record my percussion track sent through a filterdelay on a return track. I setup an audio channel to receive the audio from my 'filtdel' return track I could actually hear the delay it caused createing a nasty flange. I adjusted the return tracks 'track delay' as close as I could get it but there was still a slightly noticeable difference when I would mute and unmute the recording audio channel. I then would have to fix it with start point micro editing and try to make it match up with the actual return audio.

Something doesnt seem right. This has happened a couple times with different plugins. Some third party...some live's internal.
