Rewire allows the slave application to run VSTs. Reaper, Bidule, FL Studio are all examples that allow that as rewire slaves. Please change Ableton's Rewire implementation so that it can load plug-ins when it is a rewire slave.
I know rewire is not very trendy these days. However, I primarily use Ableton for its effects processing racks with VST instruments like Serum, while I do the sequencing and mixing in Cubase. If the ability to host those plugins while acting as a rewire slave was added to Ableton, that is functionality I would use and would not have to either (a) run Ableton standalone or (b) render Live audio and then import to Cubase. I suspect I am not alone.
This was initially requested by users back in 2011 but has never been implemented.
Use VST plug-ins when Live is Rewire slave
Re: Use VST plug-ins when Live is Rewire slave
I use Nuendo as a central hub and can run several DAWs from it via rewire (Max, Renoise etc, all of them support VSTs and VSTis)--I sure was hoping I could run Kontakt etc in Live when rewired ... oh well.
There's loopback options, but not as convenient as having 32 channels and basic sync options done for you. Realtime options are nice for sound design.

+1 to this as well. Being able to run VST's in rewire would be really useful.
