selling beats - whats a going rate?
I'm starting to sell beats to aspiring producers/rappers/musicians. And was curious as to what other people who do this charge?
for example, with 4 bar hip hop beats - would you charge $20? $50?

I just started selling beats to pot selling hip hop kids for 50 bucks a pop.
though usually people want a very simple format not just the single loop but the standard loop with a bass coming here and dropping out and the beat coming in and dropping out and distinct sections for a rapper to go through. that way if they never ever learn how to make a song they've already got something they can rap over none the less.

Who would have thought there would be a guy on the corner selling beats right next to the crack dealers.Johnisfaster wrote:I just started selling beats to pot selling hip hop kids for 50 bucks a pop.

now this is an interesting thread. who hasn't used Live and explored some idea or routing or inspiration, only to find that although a very encouraging and sometimes inspired piece you've created, it just doesn't have a place in your "work" I've done some of this and yeah a good 3-4 min simple progression of melodic theme without beat, with beat, hook, break, repeat to coda on a wav. burn could fetch a quick 25 to 50 bucks from almost any aspiring wordsmith. More so if they are getting some play in the town and are tired of grabbing simple loops from retail discs or hiring a decent dj. plus they can take it further if they like, many a good producer got started this way, actually continue as well, don't forget, if they really get into the beat; ie: make it their own, they'll probably come round again and ask if you can help record that hot take for a demo and some more green. pends where you live, could quit your day job, could get shot, could collaborate on something great you never even imagined.
bottom line, sell it like you got it, don't give away your best, don't charge for crap, but remember art is a working person's profession, "don't keep it like the kaiser."
A.K.
