Synth Funky Lead

Post by DerMax » Mon Sep 28, 2020 6:44 am

Hey everybody,

got fascinated by a synth/key sound but I have absolutely no idea how to recreate it. The sound i'm talking about sounds like this

https://youtu.be/q-t5nBbGhPM?t=2m56s

Any ideas/tips on how to get this sound? Would be really glad :D

Thanks everybody!!!

That sound very like a single saw osc on a Moog Model D with mid level resonance, slightly open attack on the filter envelope, and the filter cutoff being modulated by the mod wheel.

it's possible to get something similar on Live Suite - Analog synth. Not exactly.

Thanks a lot for your fast and specific reply!

I'm quite new to Ableton but will play with analog then to get that sound. Any ideas on how to get there?

Thanks a bunch :)

Try this:

Go into "instruments" in the browser and drag the Analog instrument into a MIDI track without picking a preset..
Switch off Osc2
Set Osc1 to a sawtooth. That's the basic wave-form.
Now for the filter.
Set the Fil1 to Fil2 ratio to 0% and FIl1 to "LP24".
Lower the filter frequency until it starts to get the sound you're after.
The envelope editor in the middle of Analog should be showing you the filter envelope. Set the "slope" to "linear" then drag the first little orange box, at the top of the end of the attack phase, leftwards until you get a "wah-wah" sort of sound at the beginning of each note. Attack around 40ms, decay 630ms, sustain 0.5 might be in the right area.

You won't get quite the same sound, only a hardware Moog ladder filter sounds quite like a Moog, but it's possible to get close.

If you want to start from a preset Analog's "Big Saw Lead" is kind of close, but it needs a bit of thinning out (switch off Osc2), the filter frequency tweaking and the effects removing.

Played around with Analog and got close to what I wanted. Made very similar setting as suggested by TLW with some minor changes. Switched slope to EXP to get an even nicer wah-effect and also played with the LFO coupled with the filter frequency.

However, still not the same sound. I guess I'll have better chances with some plugins emulating the minnimoog. Any suggestions which one is preferable (didn't get very far with Steinberg's Model E...

I really like the stuff by Arturia. Their minimoog is very tasty: https://www.arturia.com/products/analog ... verview#en

Also, Diva by U-He will help you out with some analogue-sounding liquid squelches.

If you wanna go the hardware route (loadsa options), check out Novation's Bass Station II. I have a Super Bass Station (25 years old), and it is lovely squelch squelch.

If you’ve an iPad Moog’s Model D emulation is reasonable and cheaper than most alternatives. I know someone who records using a Moog but gigs using Minimonsta. To my ears all the Arturia plugins and hardware synths have a similar “Arturia” sound quality to them, which I can’t define but I can hear.

Robert Moog’s 4-pole ladder filter is very distinctive (I believe it’s the only module circuit he took out a patent on in Moog’s early days). In “less expensive and smaller than Moog” hardware there’s Behringer’s Mini Moog desktop clone, I forget it’s name, which sounds pretty close to the real thing.

I was thinking of the Behringer Model D, not the polyphonic version.

Thanks for the info and tips. Checked out a few hardware models today. Must admit it makes quite the difference.

Still gonna have a look at the arturia, minimonsta or diva. Any chances to get close using serum?

Thanks a lot :)

Cosign on Arturia.

They do a good job at amazing presets for their synths. Their Minimoog emulation is great for live performances as well and pretty minimal on CPU. Alot of their presets sounds like the stuff people would use back in the day.
