Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Hi all,
Recently I have found that I have to force quit Live on my Mac, as it won't quit normally.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and if there are any common causes?
It doesn't seem to be happening with any other applications.
Many thanks
Ski

Usually it's due to a third party plug in, so make sure those are all up to date.

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Thanks so much for the reply.
I've managed to figure out that it's my Arturia collection that's the culprit. I'm going to try a complete reinstall and see if it helps!
Thanks again
Cheers

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Hi Ski,
I was wondering did the reinstall help. I am having a similar issue where live hang in the middle of a session and I have to force quit. I have the Arturia plugins installed and I was wondering was there an issue with them.
I am finding it hard to figure out a solution. My whole install of Ableton just is not working. It takes almost an hour an a half to load up a session starting off and then it is very glitchey. I have to do it in stages. Open ableton and let it load - 30 mins. Then load a session -between 30 and 60 minutes. Ive tried everything. Resetting live, unpluging all devices etc.
Ableton support have not got back to me yet which is very frustrating too. Could it be plugins that are causing my problem. Sorry if Im venting here but id like to know if the arturia plugins are causing trouble.
Thanks in advance.

You would need to post computer specs, year of make, is it a laptop, OS, Live version you are using and if you use an SSD or just a HDDowenp wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 6:44 pmHi Ski,

Even a fully loaded Live install with hundreds of plugins to scan should not really have a startup time longer than maybe 2 minutes at the worst end. 30-60 minutes screams of an issue and quite a bad one.
Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Apologises for not posting that info.
I am running live 10.1.3 on a 2013 iMac 3.2GHz from the internal HDD.
My OS is Mojave 10.14.6.
It is very frustrating for me and I cant get support from Ableton. I have sent crash reports, status reports and a video of the problem to them but they do not get back to me.
How can I identify if I have a problem plugin. It has been recommended to do a fresh install on another partition but Id like to avoid that if possible.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
With issues like you have, could be a HDD issue and a sign it is failing.
First suggestion would be to completely uninstall Live then download the latest version and install that.
Disable AU plugin support in the Live preferences and DO NOT add your VST path, just have Live as vanilla and try open it and compare with the experience you have where it takes 25 minutes to be usable.
Next, add your VST path back in, close Live and open again. Does it still load OK?
Lastly, if you need, re-enable AU plugin support
This is literally the "turn it off and on again" approach to an issue. Whenever you have an issue you cannot easily solve, remove program and reinstall again from scratch and retest.

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Thanks for that.
I will back everything up and give a fresh install a go.
Would it also make sense to add my VST's back in one at a time and test it that way. Or is that even possible.
Thanks again.

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Well first thing would be to just uninstall Ableton and reinstall it again using the latest version and re-test. You kind of just want to do incremental steps to solve the issue so you can narrow down what the issue is.
I would also look at clearing out the Ableton Data folder which will probably not be deleted when you uninstall Live. It remains so when you reinstall your settings are all reinstated. I am not sure where this is on Mac but google would answer that for you.
It could also be something like what paths you have added to your user location. If you have added a system path or locations where there are files other than sound files then Live could be getting stuck trying to scan files in. Only add specific locations where you have things, not whole drives or application folders.
If you suspect VSTs are the issue, you can just move the vst file from the application/audio location to another location and only add back the ones you suspect to be an issue. Create a test project based off one that has issues and see if it has problems. Keep adding back plugins until you hit the issue, uninstall that plugin and download the latest version.
And without meaning to offend, if you have any cracked plugins or software, completely remove that before doing anything since that would be an obvious point for unreliable operation.

Re: Having to force quit Live - Any solutions?
Thanks so much for the detailed response.
I will give all that a go and see if it makes any improvements.
Thanks again.
