Please help, Live 10 Crashing upon save

Post by griffjen » Sun Jan 10, 2021 5:08 pm

Whenever I save this one project, Live just quits. When I try to reopen something really strange happens:
-I reopen ableton
-Ableton asks if I want to recover my work
-I say yes
-Project reopens successfully with recent changes
-I try to save
-Ableton crashes again
-I reopen again, but this time when the project opens none of the audio files are linked and the project is called "untitled"
-I go to the latest backup file and open that but now my recent changes are lost and it seems like I'm back at the most recent save.

This is very concerning and frustrating because it seems like the more I try to save the more work I actually lose. please help!

Firstly, hen saving projects ALWAYS try and get into the habit of doing "incremental" saves every time you open your project, save it as a new version (just add a number on the end). This will at least help protect your project from being completely lost if Live crashes during a save and you also have a history of your production, just try and get into the routine of saving every hour or every time you make a big change or add new tracks etc and save as a new version.

Why Live is crashing could be infinite reasons but most probably it will be a plugin or a Max device. If it crashes every time it is easy to do some tests by trying to save a temp file and delete tracks until you find which one prevents the save. If you use any cracked plugins, i'd start with those tracks as the possible cause.

If still lost, create a crash report and contact Ableton support and see if they can advise of what is causing the crash.

I also have that “close crash” but with version 11.
In my case it is a deactivated Massive X VST3 inside an instrument rack.

Check step by step your plugins (delete VST device the. save a copy) could help!

As said before, this is most likely not an Ableton problem but an issue with your plugins
Mac Studio M2 Max and MacBook Pro M4

Genelec M030; Live 12 latest and beta; macOS 27 Golden Gate
UAD Apollo Twin

Ableton Push 2

help, Live 10 Crashing upon CLOSING project

Post by lorenzen » Wed Feb 12, 2025 5:04 pm

Hi guys

In case this can help for those who like me have this issue Live 10 Crashing upon CLOSING project

thanks to your posts, I can confirm this is a plug ins issue.
I use both M3 mac and an intel mini 6 core, with A11 and A10 under rosetta:

-Both macs crashes closing huge projects on A10 with very old, or very new plugs (VST3 more than Audio units)>
-Some old vst instruments crash more if they are off>
-A11 crashes way less even on intel
-M3 + A11 is the more stable config

So if like me you need to go on using Ableton 10 with both old and new plugs, loading projects during live session
As a work around you can try deleting tracks before loading next project.

Works for me
