simple question and to some the answer might seem obvious but not to me and thus I want to be sure:
Q1: Which level on the individual bands is measured for the thresholds?
1. The full spectrum input level or
2. Each band's level post input level-poti?
I tend to 2 since the optical level indicator for each band seems vary with the changes I apply to the FREQ and LEVEL settings. So this would just be logical.
Q2: is it possible to have the full spectrum as measured level for the threshold input but apply the compression to the separated bands? (e.g. with the sidechain input option)?

Q2, try with the sidechain yeah, but I'm not sure to exactly understand what you mean. You want the whole spectrum of your source to be the same trigger for every bands, so you're still multi-band compressing but your ignoring the input bands splitting?

Yes, in this case just use Compressor and set its internal sidechain filter to a bandpass.

But by that I cannot affect different bands on the output spectrum. I want to freely map a spectrum from a to b Hz on the input side to x to y Hz on the output side.

Right, I forgot about the whole question, sorry.
Then you could use a rack that splits the signal into e.g 3 different bands > then put a Compressor in each chain > set each Compressor sidechain to the signal that's before the rack and use the Compressors sidechain filter to set your triggering frequencey spectrum.
Or use 1 Multiband Dynamics instance per band, following the same rack method I just detailed above.
Then you could use a rack that splits the signal into e.g 3 different bands > then put a Compressor in each chain > set each Compressor sidechain to the signal that's before the rack and use the Compressors sidechain filter to set your triggering frequencey spectrum.
