Managing CPU / Processor Threads

Post by griffjen » Sun Jun 28, 2020 10:54 pm

So I am learning that when you group tracks together or send audio from one track to another (bussing) Ableton will process that whole group or chain together as one thread, eating up a lot of CPU space. How do you deal with this? Ableton is my favorite DAW but this honestly makes it almost impossible to work. I need to be able to Bus things and I need to be able to use groups. Why does Ableton work this way and is there a workaround? Also, by this logic if I send every track to a 2Bus, does this mean my entire session is being processed using one thread? That seems crazy.

I am having the same problem. 9th generation 8-core i9 sitting 75% idle while my Ableton CPU load meter is going through the roof and playback is giving me crackles. This can't be how it's supposed to be.

They mention something in the documentation about how Ableton splits out the load track by track, but that can't be true. No matter how I try to avoid grouping and to separate out my tracks it has zero effect on the cpu load. Any ideas?

It shouldn’t be idle at all. This might be an operating system issue? Do you make sure everything runs full when using Live? If your system is trying to conserve power, it might not be kicking into gear, or when it finally does, it is trying to play catch up with demands.

As for multi core functionality. Perhaps monitor the core usage? If the core usage shows what you’re assuming, you might be coming to close to the correct conclusion. But if you haven’t really dug in, there might be other factors at play.

That can also be a plugin that is eating CPU too, plus maybe you have OS tasks & stuff going on in background too.
Live 11, M1 Mac Mini, Push 2, Scarlett 18i20 & ADA8200, Softube Console 1 Mk2, Deepmind12, Hydrasynth, Cobalt 8M, Moog Subsequent 25, IK Uno Synth Pro, Plethora X3, Nord Drum 3P
