Live 1.5b3 + emi 2/6 OS X
Still experiencing audio distortion with the new OS X audio driver for emi 2/6. Anybody else ?

it starts distorting for me above 50%. also i can't figure out how to configure 6 outs, i can only get 2 in 2 out. actually i can't configure it at all, it just gives me the 2/2/44.1. how do you configure core audio devices?
btw, thanks for posting this as i didn't even know the driver was available yet...

i don't have it connected to double check, but i think it does give you two ins as well as the two outs. when you select the output device it says 0 ins 2 outs but you can select the emi as the input devices with 2 ins 0 outs. or maybe i'm remembering it wrong...
in any case, i agree, with only two outs it isn't that useful. my guess is that it's ableton that needs to support the multiple audio outs, since the emagic emi readme file implies it can use multiple outs if supported by the application. or maybe we need to wait for os x 10.2?
kind of a bummer that it isn't hot swappable either but better than nothing i guess...

The emi "driver" that you are talking about is not a driver. It is just a firmware downloader that makes the emi show up in OS X at all. You could achieve the same effect by booting into OS 9 with the emi SoundManager driver installed (or even just open the Classic environment), then boot back into OS X with the emi still plugged in.
In both cases, the actual audio driver that is used for the emi is Apple's built-in USB audio driver. As far as I can tell, that driver seems to be limited to two channels. So I think Emagic is wrong when they say that it is possible to use 6 output channels if the host supports it.

i guess that explains why it isn't hot swappable too... thanks for the explanation, stefan. sounds like either apple needs to support multi-channels on the built in driver (maybe in 10.2) or emagic needs to write their own driver (who knows when). hopefully it won't end up in a situation where each side is blaming the other...
stefan, do you know if hardware companies are expected to write drivers for os x or will they all just use the built in usb audio support?

oh god no!
i really, really hope that they come up with something. i think Apple needs to support multiple outs on it's Core Audio for this to work. Or we'll need another driver...can ASIO even be used in OSX? i've just about had it! this is a complete joke. Apple and everyone else are really dragging their feet with this whole OSX thing. every other type of app is fully OSX functional, except pro audio. this sucks! reason2 is on the way and i was so psyched to really be in OSX alot. now i have no audio. if they don't come up with something quick i'm going to the dark side. might be better off with windows anyway after reading the results of the "Performance Test 1 and 2" poll. there is nothing pro about apple's pro line right now.
one more thing...
BTW, mine in still showing up as 0ins, 2outs. looks like i'll be in OS9 for a while still...
Core Audio is not finished yet. ASIO will never come. Why do you think there are no drivers for the big audio cards yet? It doesn't really 100% work yet. Forget the the Maudio drivers (kernel panic), and just help Emagic to fix the bugs with the EMI. It was a big step for Emagic releasing beta drivers for OS X.
If you have to work professionally, go OS 9.
Hopefully OS X 10.2 will provide mayn fixes to the Core Audio stuff.
Best

brainray, how do you know that the CoreAudio is not finished yet - are you a developer???
I have us428 that i am desperately waiting for drivers in OS X.
OS X has so much promise, not of least it's stabillity.
The apple promo stuff promises multiple audio devices, built in support for vst effects and VSTi, utltra low latency, OS level audio routing and OS level MIDI routing.
sort of like taking rewire and oms and putting them in the system - which is a great move which i thought they had finished off in 10.1
I use software like LIVE and MELODYNE, which both run native in OS X. (Anybody using melodyne "live"? - tell me about your experiences!)
Does anybody know any inside info to give some promise??

Core Finished...
who knows if it's finished or not... i sent multiple emails to apple asking if Core would ever accept multiple ins and out. not surprised that they haven't responded. if it is finished, it's pathetic. if there is more one the way i simply can't wait any longer. i have a big feeling 10.2 is going to be the trigger for EVERYTHING. Logic, Reason2, DP, PT, i think they are all waitinng till 10.2 is released cause that's what is going to make these apps work properly...
