Cthulhu with Live

Post by Buleriachk » Wed Dec 24, 2014 5:11 pm

I got chords working with any instrument in Live with drum rack pads that I can name to indicate the chords in the chord set. You need a Drum Rack, a Cthulhu track, and the VST track for your instrument.

Name the Drum Rack track "Matrix"
Name the Cthulhu track "Cthulhu"
Name the Instrument track Inst.

Set the input of the Cthulhu track to your keyboard/pad input. Set Monitor "On"
In the Inst track, set the input to "Cthulhu", and change the "PostFX" to "Cthulhu set Monitor to "on"
In the Matrix track set the input to "Cthulhu" set Monitor to "On".

Make sure you turn the sound button in cthulhu off (so you only hear your vst inst). Also turn the Arp off unless that is what you want.. (works well). Construct your chord set

When you play you should see the indicators in Matrix light up for the notes from Cthulhu.

For the Drum rack, you have to have a sample in the rack to allow you to name it (I just used a sample and turned the volume all the way down, but I imagine a short blank .wav file will work as well. Drag the file to those notes you want to trigger as chords (you can turn the volume of the track down, too).

Create your chords in Cthulhu and you're ready to go. I have a non-cthulhu vst in another track so I can switch back and forth between chord mode and note mode at will....

The ability to name chords in the drum rack is great, especially for Push, which gives you an 8x8 matrix; you just have to change the position of the overlay in the drumrack to see a 4x4 subset.....

Works great with Maschine and Komplete VST's (you don't need Komplete Kontrol, but you do have to program your own chords/sets, which is good and bad - a bit more work, but ultimate flexibility. (Keep you root an octave below the third works, and don't muddy the chords up too much (6 notes as on the guitar is kind of overkill..:)

Hope this helps.... let us know how you're doing....

PXT-Live requires a Push. This method will work with any keyboard.

Re: Cthulhu with Live - Saving Cthulhu Presets

Post by sj1 » Tue Mar 02, 2021 7:12 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to be able to organize my saving of Cthulhu VST presets from Ableton Live (11).

I would like the saved preset files to be saved here:

...\Ableton\User Library\Presets\Instruments\Cthulhu

I am fumbling as the best info I have found so far is that the Cthulhu needs to be grouped into an instrument rack in order to be able to save as a VST preset at all, yet when I do so I do not seem to be able to make the VST preset save to the desired logical location.

It seems to always want to save under the generic label Instrument Rack:
...\Ableton\User Library\Presets\Instruments\Instrument Rack

I would settle for:
...\Ableton\User Library\Presets\Instruments\Instrument Rack\Cthulu

( ala ...\Ableton\User Library\Presets\Instruments\Instrument Rack\Wavetable )

but I have not been able to achieve that either.

Could someone (ideally a Chtulhu user) kindly walk me thru this?

Thanks!
Live 11, Windows 10 Pro, LPP MK3
