g4

Post by wavejumper » Tue Oct 04, 2005 1:42 pm

a 1.67 G4 runs Logic and related plugins pretty smoothly, it follows (not necessarily) that it should run something like Live a little bit better.

i have 2ghz g5 imac and it runs live with the same cpu usage as dual 2ghz g5, to me that's bad coding, it does not make an efficient use of the available resources.

mind you, got my imac knowing about the performance tests on this forum, knew what i was getting and did not mind, I get my tracks done.

My powerbook doesn't run Logic that well - heavy plug-ins kill it.

And we know that it makes almost no difference with Live on a iMac G5 or on a Powermac because it only uses one processor - but we also know that Ableton is working on implementing multithreading.

I would say that even Logic is bad coded, because it's often not really intuitive and the ui is a mess.

Still does not help me? Why then is AdamJay on a powerbook G4 at 66% and I am on a imac g4 with a .25 ghz difference an I am getting 130 %?????? Please...lets get into "oh cause your on a mac..blah...blah...blah....."

Okay and here is another example of why this is so puzzling:

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter - 132%
2) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model - Apple Imac G4 15"
3) Operating System - OSX 10.3.9
4) CPU Make Model and Speed - G4 800mhz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram - 768mb / PC133
6) Soundcard - Stock Core Audio card
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed - Booting from External 7200rpm

I almost double the processor speed, same amount of ram at a higher speed, and yet we are at the same cpu usage?

Please tell me it's that I must not be optimized for audio right. Also Adam says to set the processor speed in the energy settings to high??? I can't seem to find this setting in my energy settings....

my 1.33 12" pbook is at 70-odd (see earlier). make sure all power saving bits are turned off and maybe check your hardware with a check with the apple diagnostics.

adam's obviously the main man for all this so he'll sugest other stuf i'm sure.

It's under options. Check it, because it's much faster.

This is what the Optiions folder looks like on a Powermac G5.
I can't remember if it's the same on an iMag G4, but I'm sure it's the same for Powerbooks.

"Prestazioni processore" it the Italian for "CPU performance".

Also try again the test using only the built-in audio, with the saffire not connected.

Not your RAM... you've got plenty. PowerBooks are just slow. This test is showing why Apple is switching to Intel CPUs.

Well, I'm comparing with other Powerbooks as mine. I know Macs are slow.
Other people get 66% with exactly the same computer as mine. What am I doing wrong ?

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter % - 32%
2) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model - Desktop PC .
3) Operating System - Win XP Sp2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed - AMD XP3200+ - 2.2ghz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram (if you know) - 1.25gig, 400mhz
6) Soundcard (Stock or add on?, usb/firewire/pci ?) - Delta 44
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed (if you know) - 7200rpm SATA

Jubei,
got your PM, sorry for just getting to you now. i've had to care for my mother the last few days.

all Macs have the power settings
and Imacs have it set it to "automatic" by default.
you want "highest"

here is what you do step by step -

go to System Preferences
Click on Energy Saver
Click on Options
See the "Processor Performance" dialogue - change "Automatic" to "Highest"
(There are 3 options, reduced, automatic, and highest - you want Highest)

i am 99% certain this is why your score is so low.
and the other 1% could be that your Focusrite Saffire is a real CPU hog, but not likely. Just to be safe, test with your onboard sound instead of the Saffire and see what the result is.

cheers
AJ

jubei, can you email me a screenshot of what you see after you click the options tab?

to make a screenshot, just hit Apple+Shift+3, it will save to your desktop with a name like "Picture1"
email me that to [email protected]

also, let's continue the rest of this conversation in Private Messages only, no need to clog this TEST thread with trouble shooting conversation.
so if you reply to me, please do it over PM.

cheers.

The Imac does indeed have this setting .
It ships in a default "economy" mode and needs to be changed to get maximum use from the CPU.
Infact all Mac's are shipped of the floor in economy mode be they iBooks , PowerBooks or iMac's.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....
